Blacklisted Mobile Phone

    Hi,

I recently bought a phone(HTC One) from DoneDeal. I'm pretty sure I got caught out by a scam in doing so.

I bought the phone privately in Galway. I checked everything as per Done Deals guide and the phone was in perfect working order when I bought it. Receipt, boxed, correct IMEI, Internet worked, phone worked etc.

So I proceeded about my daily business delighted with my excellent new phone. Then bam the phone stopped receiving coverage. None at all only Data. I wasn't getting any signal.

I went on the old google machine, and after much reading and trying to get the phone to work something a few websites said sent off alarm bells regarding the phone getting blacklisted. there were a few incidents wherby the seller, sells the phone and then reports it stolen to claim back the insurance money on the device. So I contacted meteor and thanks to our 'super' data protection act they were unable to give me any information on the guy but did say that his account was marked as suspicious and that I should contact the gaurds.

Which I did, last night. I explained the situation to the Garda on duty last night and while he played a littlle dumb at first he seemed to not only know about these scams he knew what house that the scams were ran out of.

So we went over to the house I bought the phone in order for me to identify the suspect and for the Gaurds to arrest him. in fairness to the gaurds they did all they could and I think they only brought me over in the long shot to get my money back.

Any way to cut a long story short I now have a phone that is effectively a paper weight, and I down a few hundred euro also. Do I have any, however slight, sort of come back in this situation. Either from done deal, meteor, carphone warehouse or insurance company.

Maybe the insurance company, I doubt you will get any money back but the guy might lose his new phone.

I have encountered a similar scam... I think. Bought a Samsung s3 last week and ever since, when Im not in a wifi zone, I am not getting mobile data service. In fact, on the main screen, it comes up as "E" for edge I think?? I contacted the owner and he said their were no issues with it. Could I be simply just missing something or what? he was with meteor and I have one of his meteor bills, could I ring them up with the details or will they shoot me down?

Edge is just what the phone reverts to when it cant pick up a 3g signal. Your phone is fine, the area your in just has crap reception. But the S3 has been known to stick on edge when it reverts back.

    3 Options Below

    Toggle Airplane mode on/off
    Restart Phone.
Or In Settings - Set To WCDMA only.

Should bring your 3g or H+ back, if you have a good coverage area that is

Get evidence of your formal report to the Gardai and write to Meteor along with any supporting info that you have from DoneDeal (date you bought t or any correspondence).

May take a while to sort out though. I'm sure the insurance co. will want to get out of paying up.

Your problem is with the person who gave you the phone and took your money - none of the others have any dealings with you. The insurance company might be interested in doing a deal with you, but I don't think it will be hugely favourable.

How do you know the phone is from Carphone Warehouse? :)
