I've just lately had to replace the speed control unit on my 10-year-old trolley and feel a bit peeved about having to pay €65 for what is a simple piece of electronics. Has anyone tried repairing these? Does anyone know where to buy what appear to be the main suspects, the two IRFZ48N MosFETs or the D15LC20U rectifier? If it were feasible, I'd like to fix up the faulty one and keep it in reserve, rather than simply dump it.

Most folks who know anything about golf, dont know anything about electronics.. and can get away with it.
€65 is cheap. They are €70 on Ebay...

If it blows up, its sometimes the mosfets, sometimes the voltage regulator.
If it stalls, Hiccups, its usually dirty or bad contacts on the relay (if fitted!)
If doesn't control the speed, its usually the pot, or the wiring.
but PCB also can be corroded, in which case, bin it.

In ten years you've only spent €65 on repairs? Can't see too much wrong with that!
Did you have to replace the battery many times?

A guy that we use for trolley repairs is Mark Broderick based in Celbridge. His contact number is 087 8152929.

Might be worth a shout to price up the part.

Thanks to all who've replied. I'm not grumbling about the spend, just that it seems steep for what's on the board - you can buy a TV for not much more - and it seems a shame to throw it out. I've had to replace the battery just once, about three years ago; the trolley has on the whole been great and I'd recommend the model to anyone.

Whizzbang, do you know of a source for the parts?

Just bought a freeway sport digital online last week, just wondering how much a battery is?

Check out http://www.electrictrolleyparts.co.uk/ . I have dealt with Colin before and is very good.

Internet is the place for electronics parts. However there is a programmable PIC chip on these controllers, not available of the shelf. You will have to write the code yourself!

But.. How long is it going to take you to faultfind, or even just replace all parts.? so then how much would you charge for your time? Then add testing, fitting, retesting. Warranty?

Total cost of electronics parts maybe €3 (bulk buy). Then Case, Covers, Cables. etc. Small quantities of the waterproof coating for PCB cost more than the parts.

    (+1 on Sipper )

    Europower.ie for batteries.

I've found this site good for spares (proprietary rather than generic type):
    www.golfgeardeals.ie

Yep, I've used this for spares recently too. Robbie is very helpful & responsive to queries and parts arrive promptly.
I've replaced all of the electrics at various points & the handle just last week and also the wheels, so only the frame and gearbox of the original are left.

I guess the parts are a bit specialised so won't be as cheap as consumer electronics.
