If you can't stand the sound of Britney Spears's early music, you're not alone: Somali pirates hate it, too.

According to an interview by Metro UK with merchant navy officer Rachel Owens, Spears's music is used as a kidnapping deterrent because the pirates "can’t stand Western culture or music," particularly radio hits like "Oops! I Did It Again."

It's nothing personal against Spears, who's preparing to embark on a two-year residency in Las Vegas -- the naval officers just chose her because "they thought the pirates would hate them most."

Somali pirates have been plaguing the world of shipping and receiving off the Horn of Africa since the late 1990s, when Somalia's civil war began. The threat became deadly when, in 2005, the pirates began seizing ships and cargo, including critical foreign aide supplies like food, which are intended to help those living in extreme poverty.

Perhaps, then, Spears should be flattered; her music is literally saving lives.

"As soon as the pirates get a blast of Britney, they move on as quickly as they can," Owens explained.

Spears's camp has yet to comment on the decision to use her music in this way.
