As a sole trader I signed up to ROS with high hopes..., but in reality what it means is I now have to print off revenue correspondence myself :( this is costing me time and effort, I'd rather receive paper correspondence by post like before saving me the hassle, plus whatever I print isin't considered "Original"

If there is a dispute in the future my paper printouts will be meaningless as evidence,

If you're in business you're almost certainly a mandatory electronic filer. So you're stuck with ROS.

Well if you are a sole trader and VAT registered you are most likely a mandatory e-filer anyway and are thus required to be registered on ROS.

As for paper printouts being meaningless as evidence, this surely cannot be the case. If it were then every single company, trust, partnership and VAT registered person registered for tax in Ireland would be effected by this. From memory, I think there is specific legislation that deems the electronic copies of returns to be original returns for all purposes of the Tax and VAT Acts.

Thanks for the replies, as a tiny sole trader I'm not registered for VAT so I don't have to be on ROS....

Read this then - and see if you qualify not to have to file electronically.

But they're going to catch up with you eventually!

OP why do you have to print stuff off ROS? I use it and never have to print anything.

Is it just because you like having things on paper? Is it to give info to your accountant? You can just email them the pdf, or even better give them "agent access". This means they can log in themselves and see the relevant stuff.

If there is a dispute in future you can just point at the documents on ROS! They don't disappear...
