Got a loan of lights, where to start...?

Got a loan of a set of Elinchrome Bxri 500 strobes to try out. I want to get into portrait and product photography but just don't have a clue where to start.

I don't have a model to work with and my gf is not in until late normally so no idea where to start.

I don't have a background, juste a white wall and also don't have a light meter. I'm using 5dmkii and triggers.

What settings do I start off at othe camera/ lights?

There are soft boxes on the lights also, should have mentioned!

Or does anyone have any good places to go to to start learning about using lights?

    Cheers

What size space? what are you shooting?
Try using one at 45deg the start and set it to half power, go for ISO 100 and f8 and play around with shutter speed to get what you like.
Add a second light from the opposite direction with 1/4 power as you see fit.
    Enjoy it!

If you have absolutly no clue whats so ever try this.

1.Set your camera to ISO 100 .... 1/250s at F8 and White balance to "daylight"

2.Set your light power to 3 on those units and place them 6 feet from the wall

    3. Put a chair or some object at the wall and take a picture.

    4. Repeat step 3 with different aperture settings until you get.

Your best bet is to play around with it for a while first and see what happens

For a 5DmkII, set your shutter speed to 1/125th when using flash. It can technically sync at 1/200th, but Canon cameras are absolutely ****e at syncing with any non-canon flashes and will show heavy vignetting at max sync.

As well as all of the above, have a look on youtube for some tips on studio lighting.
