Folks, new old house with an aerial on the roof.

    Excellent!

I believe uhf aerials can receive saorview but vhf can't. OK.

How do I know what type the aerial on the roof is?

Easiest way would be to post a photo of your aerial but, it's a bit dark now to be taking photos . . .

    Here's a few examples:

    7656650450_a9a3a924b3_n.jpg9074696009_3ca36ab6fc_n.jpg

Pic. 1 (left) is: top, an X-element type UHF aerial, fairly high gain. Below it a 6 element VHF aerial.

Pic. 2 is: top, an 18 element UHF aerial, with the top aerial from photo 1 now mounted below.

The difference in the length of UHF & VHF elements is particularly marked with the 18 element UHF, though still evident with the 'X' types.

Went onto Street View to have a look.

This is what's up there at the moment.

The one on the left is the one relevant to the property.

    Looks UHF to me?

    2 UHF aerials.

Is one of them used for Freeview from NI?

    Where are you located approx.?

Location is Dundalk so there's a very good chance that it was at some stage in it's life alright.

    That's really good news so.

Just a case of a Saorview tuner so and off we go ! :)

The lower vertically polarised UHF contract aerial is for saorview Clermont Carn, the upper hi-gain aerial maybe Divis Belfast - http://www.ukfree.tv/txdetail.php?a=IJ287750

Is the aerials out of alignement?
looking at the one on the right is not parallel to the one on the left...
Look like the pole is not tight and the wind had turned the aerials, weather the one on the left or right
Can you check next door to see what their siginal like for Saorview and Freeview?

Alot of houses in the town would have this setup for Saorview and Freeview reception. Aerial on top for FV (usually from Belfast), lower one for SV from Clermont Carn.

    UHF channel numbers from Belfast would be 21, 23, 24 (Freeview HD), 26, 27 & 29. Clermont Carn frequencies are 52 & 56.

You may get interference on 23 & 26 from Belfast due to them sharing these channels with Mt Leinster in Carlow.
