Hi there, i recently found this poster among some of my grandfathers old stuff. Just wondering would anyone have information on it, or any links to someone that might be in the know. It is an original produced by Gale + Polden of london, however no dates are present. I am currrently in the process of putting it onto microfilm, having taken the image using a 35mm overhead camera, and hopefully revive some of it using photoshop. Any info or input would be great, Thanks!

You may be able to get some information in the "Strength and Strength Sports" forum in the Sports forum. The tread entitled "Historical Strongmen" may be of interest.

(Sorry I tried to provide a link but couldn't get it to work)

The guy's name is Eugene Sandow...he was a victorian health guru and one of the first bodybuilders.

He died in 1928 so your poster must be older than that,i certainly have never seen one before.

Thanks for your reply, I can find plenty of information on him, but little on the books he produced, all seem to be pre 1910. There is a few books which are free to download as a pdf online but no posters. As for the publishing company they closed down in the 60's. I'm thinking of framing it, cause if its worth nothing I'm not too bothered, it's just a pretty cool poster!

A quick search threw up this link to an art history article:

    http://udini.proquest.com/view/arresting-beauty-the-perfectionist-pqid:2405062491/

The poster is probably figure 3.50 in the article - "ca 1896".
