    Hi

Looking at changing my car to a SUV type vehicle. I do a commute of 60 miles per day 5 time as week.

Any suggestions what has good MPG for me to start looking?

I don't need much space as it's just me and and we have a family car. Most of mileage is cross country - windy roads etc.

    thanks for advice.

Most SUVs are not designed with high mpg in mind. They are big, bulky and the 4wd train makes them heavy.

You also need to provide details on what sort of budget you have and do you have motor tax limitations.

You can have an SUV, or you can have good MPG, but you will be hard pressed to find both.

    Thanks for the replies.

It's just the road's i go on are crap - potholes everywhere and last time I had a Rav4 it made the drive easier. It was a few years ago and the MPG didnt bother me

my budget is about 6k only - motor tax not an issue.

I kinda had it in my head that I wouldn't get a decent MPG SUV but just wanted to check with experts. I'm driving a peugeot 407 1.6hdi 2005 at the moment an it's starting to get a bit squeaky at 270,000 kilometres!

OP your reasons don't make sense.

You want an SUV but you don't need the space? Each to their own I guess.

I'd look at getting a 4wd car, it would give a better mpg than the bigger SUV, estate form would give similar space.

If you were happy with the Rav4 then there are similar soft roaders out there. With a budget of €6k you will be looking at fairly leggy diesel examples though. Something like a Suzuki Grand Vitara, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe, etc. You are then stepping up to full size off roaders like the Land Cruiser, Pagero, etc which will all have higher running costs.

Get the seller to NCT it first & you have a decent enough motor.

For a good comfortable SUV there is some nice discoverys range rovers or grand cherokees
They can be beautiful to drive and have lots of extras. The down side is none are good on fuel even in diesel. Actually diesel is they only viable option in big SUV as long as some idiot hasn't fitted big alloys with low profiles tyres you'll just glide over pot holes.
I drive a Jeep grand cherokee diesel and although I love it 60 miles a day is a lot of gas money. I pick a 2 liter diesel car for that commute.

Op no matter what you buy for 6k in the line of jeeps SUVs your looking at 30-35mpg. Is imagine your 407 is doing 50-55 mpg do that's a big difference fuel wise. There is no SUV jeep that going to do anything near the mpg of the 407 not one for 6k anyway. So if you like the 407 and the engine is good in it would you not just spend a grand or so in it and get worn bushes ball joints etc replaced as they would be causing the squeaking.
