Hi, We have stayed in Lanzarote for the last 2 years with Falcon. We are a laze by the pool/beach with a book while the kids(6 & 4) splash about. We were thinking of trying to go independently next year to see if we could get it any cheaper and just wondering if he anyone has gone there on their own steam and do they have any recommendations.

Have a look through this forum, Lanzarote is a very popular destination and it's one you'll easily save money on by booking it yourself. Ryanair, Aer Lingus fly in most days, you can get charters too with the tour operators depending on availability.

As for accommodation, there's any number of recommendations. I like the Costa Sal in Matagorda, it's nice, staff are lovely and it's fairly cheap. If you want kids clubs, then the Sol Lanzarote has one and it's a beachfront property in Matagorda.

I like Matagorda because it's quiet but 5 mins in a taxi and you're in Puerto del Carmen and all that it offers. Taxi from and to the airport works out at around €20.

Last time I priced it, booking it all myself was giving a saving of about €700. The beauty of it was paying for flights up front and for the hotel on arrival makes it easier to budget.

Use skyscanner to determine which airline is offering the cheapest flights. :)

I highly recommend Relaxia Lanzaplaya in Puerto Del Carmen.. it's 5 minutes walk to the main strip of restaurants and the beach.

We stayed here for 9 nights last month.. cost us €378 for self catering.. that was for a one bed apartment.

You really couldn't get a better location in PDC for that price imho.. 2 good sized pools and a kiddies pool..

We will definitely be going back there again.. have stayed in a few places in PDC but this was the best by far in our books.

You could look at Costa Sal, Matagorda - as mentioned below very close to Puerto del Carmen

10 minutes from the Airport, everything you need for your family on site, and no more than 5 minutes to beach/shopping complex.

Restaurant on site was pretty good last year, but unless you are into karaoke/Elvis, I'd look for an apartment a bit away from the main pool

Personally I enjoy Costa Teguise. It's quieter than PDC, but excellent for kids.

I've never stayed there, but the sands beach is meant to be very good. You can get self catering villas and apartments there either through the hotel or through owners direct. It has a lagoon, kids clubs and restaurants and is only a five minute walk to the main beach and resort centre.

Costa Teguise is only €25 in a cab from the Airport as well.
