Im sick of Starcraft 2. I also have played all TW games, COH games, Men of war games, Age of empires 2, (Dislike 3) and probably a lot more I can't think of off the top of my head.

I really just need a new RTS fix xD, Planetary Annihilation looks like its going to be great but Its a bit pricey for me at the moment.

    Warhammer 40k Universe:

Dawn of War 1 + myriad of sequels: traditional base building + the precursor to the strategic points in CoH.

Dawn of War 2 + sequels: Squad based, minimal to no base building, interesting though flawed.

Both games + sequels can be had quite cheaply these days.

There's also old school stuff like Empire Earth on GoG.com if you fancy seeing some history. :)

Big fan of Warhammer 40k, both the table top and all games :)

Empire Earth, now there is a game that completely left my mind. I think I have that on disc somewhere, do people still play it>

Thats good to hear, I love the concept of the game but I haven't really been following any gameplay videos as of yet.

Sometimes you can get caught up in the hype bubble if you do that too much... nowadays i tend to wait until a week after release, check metacritic and let that be that.... i learned my lesson after getting so worked up about GTA5 and Rome Total War 2....

On a side not, have you ever looked at the Resource Management style of RTS? For example Anno 2070.... I love the base building element of RTS so i really enjoyed this

Also what about the C&C franchise? Are you "yay" or "nah"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,122 ✭✭✭killanena

Im a nah with C&C to be honest, I don't hate them, but I don't like them enough to sink my few hours of gameplay a week into them.
Anno 2070 does sound very interesting and I love base building :)

I don't really get hyped for games but I fall victim to steam sales pretty badly xD I have about 120 games on steam alone, and about 30 of them I haven't even launched yet or only the once. I'll get around to them eventually of course.

+1 for anno,I love that game so much

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,122 ✭✭✭killanena

I'll give Anno a try so :) Anyone know if its on sale anywhere at the moment? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,644 ✭✭✭✭nesf

Ubisoft being Ubisoft, don't expect it to randomly pop up on sale. It's not old enough yet, it took them over a year to offer a decent discount in a Steam Sale on it.

One warning, while it's a good game (and has a nice tough learning curve) it's much closer to something like Caesar III than Starcraft. If you've not played the latter it's very good and very cheap these days being a game from my teenage years. :P

Nothing I love more then a tough learning curve :p, I'll probably pick it up around the Christmas sales, I bought prison architect on the humble indie store for €20 last night. I'm already addicted :p

Agree with Nesf, it's more of a town/base builder than a battle RTS. You do have units that fight but it really takes a back seat (similarly to Ceaser 3 as mentioned above).
I'll be honest, I got about 60hours of out of Anno 2070 (can't speak for the others in the series or the relevant Underwater expansion pack) and for those 60 hours I really liked it. But once I finished it, the challenges and whatever "event" was live at the time, I was bored. It was like a light switch went off.
Though it might be one of those things where I'd revisit itevery like 18 months, really enjoying it and then getting bored (like the Sims or Sim City or something).

TBH even if you are not a fan of the C&C series, I would recommend 3 Tiberium Wars (with Kanes wrath expansion pack).
It's the most balanced game in the series, benifits from the experience they learned for the predecessor games (Tiberium Sun etc). And the introduction of the 3rd race is pulled off well.

Also, you my sister swears by the Stronghold series, I believe the 2nd one with expansions (avoid the 3rd apparently)

I don't know if you've been exposed to them, but the LOTR RTS games are VERY good.
They really don't get the credit in the genre they deserve.
The 1st is good and faithfully follows the films stories with in game cutscenes etc.
But the 2nd is just and EXTREMELY good game.

Also if you have ANY interest in Turn Based Strategy (I know thats not the purpose of your OP, but many times there's a cross-over between fans), I would highly recommend the recently released X-Com Enemy Within, Civ4 (or 5 depending on your preference) and Jagged Alliance 2 (with a game mod I can find out the name of if your want to know more)

I've been playing RTS since Warcraft 1 and C&C 1 so I am HEAVILY invested in the genre (along with TBS games too)

Possible mention for Warcraft 2 aswell? (i think there's a HD version or something due out soon, probably a rip off)

Also I may have went off topic as by Competitive I assumed you meant versus other humans online (wheras I only play RTS and TBS in single player, always have... .except SC2)

    Oh
    My
    God

How did we all forget Myth The Fallen Lords, Myth 2 Soulblighter.... and the other one... Myth 3 Wolf Age (cough cough).

I know they don't age well but f**k me what a fantastic series.

I've NEVER contributed to a kickstarter because I'm a stinger b****x, but I would if a 4th one of these was planned.

God this post is getting out of hand

Avoid Stronghold 3. If someone tries to offer it to you cheap, run child and don't look back...

Turn based, hmm, I think Slitherine's Panzer Corps is a damned good entry if you enjoy wargames. Very different to an RTS being more inspired by Panzer Generals from the early 90s than C&C but before we had Dune II swaying people over to the Dark Side (tm) all us wargame fans were playing Battle Isle, Panzer Generals, Steel Panthers and other similar TBS wargames . ;)

I love stronghold 2 and crusader, but Im just looking for something new and exiting, after looking more into anno I have decided it isn't really for me, If it had more combat maybe. I love the battle for middle earth games but same issue again. Been there played that :p, Im finding it impossible to find an RTS that I haven't played that is good! :p

Planetary Annihilation is awesome but I agree, hold out for it. I think it'll make a splash on the competitive RTS scene. You could also try Forged Alliance Forever, it's a great rebalance of supreme commander and has a large following.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,122 ✭✭✭killanena

Yea I think ill what for PA :) at least till its in beta.
    Forged Alliance Forever

Now there is a game I haven't played or have even looked into! :) Thank you! :) I'll look into it when I get home :D

How about homeworld? Replayed all of the homeworld series games a while ago, fantastic space RTS.

Another great game, Hostile Waters, more of a strategy action game.

edit: Missed the whole competitive bit, dont know if these games are played online anymore, but great games.

Never even heard of either of them, They look interesting though I might take a look sometime but what Im really looking for at the moment is a strong multiplayer rts. I've been playing men of war assault squad and its kinda scarching the itch I have but not entirely I really want something new :P

You should check them out if you get a chance, granted a bit old now but still brilliant, they were both very original games and ahead of there time when released.

Here is a link to the metacritic website for the homeworld games:

    Metascore of 93 for homewrold:
    http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/homeworld

Metascore of 89 for Homeworld Cataclysm:
    http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/homeworld-cataclysm

Metascore of 83 for Homeworld 2:
    http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/homeworld-2

My favorite is Homeworld Cataclysm of the 3 homeworld games.

Any RTS gamers out there you'd be insane not to pick these up and go n' get yourself the FAF community client.
