Hi Guys, My mother has recently started the Fetac level 5 healthcare support course and is struggling with it.. Is there anywhere online I can get information or sample assignments or any kind of help on this so that I could help her out in some way?

    Thanks so much :)

Hi, I am about to start this course tomorrow. Would love to know a bit more about the assignments/ work load. And would your mother recommend I buy my own laptop for the course?

I did this course last year. It was pretty full on with the assignments as we only had one written exam. We did a number of assignments on set topics, for example care of the older person with specific needs such as parkinson's, dementia, cancer etc. To give you an idea of length, my word count for this assignment was 3,200 including cover sheet, references etc. Then there were learner journals, these were the really tough ones. Learning through reflective practice and all that lark. I found these so tough and put a LOT of work into them to get distinctions. My work experience one was 21,000 words (yes 21,000 words, longer than a thesis!) but it was worth it to get all distinctions (there was only two in my class of 25 that got distinctions on this).

You'll definitely need access to a computer to type your assignments and do research etc. But your college may have computers you can use. Your heart will be broken if you try to handwrite them as you'll have so many revisions and references, citations etc and you'll definitely need internet access for research etc. Your college also may not accept hand written work as we also had to email copies of ours (to check for plagiarism I think).

You won't be able to get sample assignments as each tutor sets their own but her tutor should be able to guide her with the assignments. She could ask to see copies of last year's work, our tutor showed us the ones that got top marks so we could see what she was looking for.

I'm not sure if what I've said above is true for all colleges or if the one I went to was just particularly tough...I'm doing nursing now and find that the standards and expectations are pretty similar. May not be the same everywhere though.

Sounds really intense! Well done on doing so well though that's a great achievement. I'm hoping to go on and do psychiatric nursing so fingers crossed I get a lot of distinctions! My first assignment is due in next week in A&P, I've done it before but the a&p I'm being taught at the minute is very indepth and detailed.

I would agree that the course is intense, you would need your own computer for the course. If you are lucky enough there might be computers in the classroom.
