Ive a 1.6 tdci 2009 focus, which Im doing 670 miles on a week. About 70% of that is motorway going at 110/120. using the cars computer im getting over the week about 6.5l.100km. Ive been keeping an eye on the economy on just motorway runs and its all over the place! the instantaneous could show 5.3 or abouts and the avg is up at 6. after 30/40 mins it jumps up to 6.7. maybe its jus me but it seems a tab high. the car was in the garage a couple weeks ago with a dpf problem. i had it cleaned and ist been running ok since. Am i wrong thinking it should be doing better and anyone else with a 1.6 td, what are you getting?

670 miles = 1078km a week per tank is about right. opps sorry I presume you are brimming it at the start of the week.

Your biggest mistake is trusting the on board computer it will only give a rough idea. Fill the car with diesel to the brim reset trip to zero. Drive till near empty or whenever you usually fill it. Note down litres it took to brim it again and km traveled in clock. Work out mpg from there or just post it here and someone will work it out. I have a mk2 focus 1.6 tdci and generally get 53-54 mpg but I do little town driving and normally long runs. My computer can read anywhere from 4-6l per 100km depending on when I reset the average. 5.3l 100km would sound about right for motorway if not slightly high.

Going on my last post how many litres does it take to fill the tank.

MPG wise that appears to be about 43 mpg which is decent enough if you are doing a 70/30 mix of urban/motorway?

For a 1.6 Diesel? I'd be expecting about 10 more than that lad.

Don't trust those on-board Computers for a second mate. In my experience, they're all over the shop. I don't know why they bother putting them in at all when they can't carry out the one function they're there for.

    FYP

You have to consider the impact of the urban driving, diesels hate being driven in urban environments and eat fuel in my experience.

I used commute 95% motorway and had a diesel and got close to 50 mpg from it, any urban driving and it couldn't pass a filling station without a top up.

My mpg in a 2.0 petrol that is 13 years old and not driven conservatively is about 35 if pure motorway driving, add in urban driving and it drops to about 26, pure urban driving and it's about 20

It's not a straight drop it's exponentially bad.

OP really needs to brim the tank, record mileage driving urban/motorway and track in that regard.

I know what you're saying mate, but he said 70% of his driving is Motorway. Besides, my missus has a 1.5 diesel and it returns 53 mixed.

Honestly, I think 43 mpg from a modern 1.6 diesel in a fairly small car is poor.

A 2.0 liter diesel in bigger car would return better.

I think the clue is DPF needed to be cleaned
    Along with heavy on fuel.

I Start by checking air filter and make sure engine is running at correct tempture.
If both seem ok then check to see if there is any fault codes

Fill it to the brim then drive it all week. Record miles or km driven. Divide the amount of litres it took to fill it by the kms driven. That'll give ye kms per litre. Multiply that by 4.546 and that i think gives ye miles per gallon

Urban driving does kill diesel economy, especially when cold. But even at that I would be expecting a little more than that from a 1.6 diesel. If you have a smart phone it would be worth getting one of the free phone apps to track your usage over the coming weeks and posting the results.

You're not quite there yet, you need to include a factor to convert kilometres to miles. ;)

Use the brimming method, it's the only way to get real numbers.
