Any of ye know where I can buy one of the pump rotation indicators? The little gadget that spins when you hold it in front of a pump, usually hangs off a keyring?

I got some off a Wilo rep, given them all out now. Try contacting a rep for one of the pump companies.

Thanks Billy but very rarely have any contact with the reps, contracts manager orders the pumps and they just come to site, might ask the contracts manager can he get one for me :)

They are not really that good , used one on a sime boiler the other day , it was spinning when I held it to the pump but the pump wasn't actually spinning it was seized .

Here is a place where you can buy them , a bit expensive considering the pump reps give them out for free but if you really want one ......

I use them all the time. It will indicate whether the motor is turning but correctly said if the impellor is seized it will not show this. Also very useful to tell if the pump has power, e.g. gas boiler sequence of ignition.

I got mine FOC from Firebird at the OFTEC conference in the UK a few years back.

Always thought they were a bit of a gimmick myself. Nothing a phase tester and big flat head won't tell you and more reliably..

Ouch, I wouldn't put my life at risk holding a phase tester between myself & mains voltage.....

2 seconds with the rotation indicator I know it has power & the motor is turning.

Capacators are another common problem on pumps, they revolve but weak as f.
    Always test capactor if possible.

sparks do it all the time, that was usually good enough for me.

A high quality glow stick will tell you if there is power, if you don't want to lift covers.

i don't trust any tool that fits on a ring chain, bar vent keys and bottle openers :p

LOL, true but phase testers are unapproved voltage indicators. I can see many DIYers putting themselves between mains power & a €2.99 screwdriver from Lidl.

Plus I like things that spin!

Testing voltage is a different thing all together.
It is very difficult to get a high quality power testing screw driver. As can be seen by a visit to any local Heat Merchants or equivalent or even electrical wholesaler. I will trust that the tester these people give me, won't kill me.

My multimeter would only have been pulled out if i needed to get more precise on voltage, it was never used for safety concerns. Phase testers being sold from the many outlets countrywide are safe to use. Of course using them correctly is important.
