Comments on news websites

It's been a wet miserable day so I did a lot of surfing on the internet and I wish I hadn't.

Is is just me or are the comments on some news websites such as thejournal*dot*ie downright depressing? It's as if the keyboard warriors are on standby to either directly slate the content, journalists, fellow commenters or anybody they can vent their vitriol upon.

Maybe I'm a little too sensitive but I think I might stay with the mainstream media outlets.

I agree, NO seems to be the preferred option on the opinion polls regardless of the question.

On another topic, I don#t like how the likes of The Journal insist you have a facebook or twitter account to comment.

Even the comments stream on some more established news sites seem to be unmoderated (= ignored) so they are happy hunting grounds for all sorts of weirdos letting off steam and airing their wacko theories and prejudices.

Indeed, another reason not to participate. Although I reckon many people set up a FB/Twitter account specifically for these sites.
