Why is the Intel Sandy bridge i5-2500K still a good bit more expensive than the Intel Ivy Bridge 3rd Generation Core i5-3570K? I don't think there's a lot between them processor wise? so why is the older one still more expensive?

    Because Intel are greedy mofos.

I can't think of any rational reason to pay more for the 2500k.

I've also noticed that previous-generation graphics cards often have surprisingly high prices on amazon. For example, many gtx 670's on amazon are over 300 pounds. You can get the newer gtx 760 (maybe 5% slower) for 200 pounds.

I would have thought that merchants would want to clear out the older stock, but clearly there's something else going on.

It's to get people who won't go "whole hog" on upgrades and replace mobo + ram + cpu in one sweep. Similarly for peeps who wanna SLi/Crossfire for a performance boost rather than a full upgrade.

Theres no REAL reason as to why it should be more expensive,

Is this the case on all sites or just a particular one?

Mainly supply and demand I'd imagine, as Intel would have by now drastically cut production volumes of them (if not stopped completely) the remaining stock will still fetch a nice price.

Edit: HMM think about it some more since you can stick an Ivy bridge into most P67,H67 Z68 boards this doesn't really hold true, so I don't know why anybody would pay more for the i5-2500k.

Aren't both of those cpus socket 1155? So if you can upgrade to 2500k then you could also upgrade to (cheaper, newer) 3570k?

    That's my point I guess

The 2500K was\is extremely popular but if you fit the 3570K to the same type board for less? it's a no brainer unless I'm missing something very obvious?

Yes, I agree. I was responding to marco_polo's comment about supply and demand.

I wonder if it isn't more of a "fishing" game, where they're hoping to snag the less informed buyers.
