Looking to drop some money into relatively safe ETF's to just forget about for a few years. I found this interesting thread from 2009: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=62849096
    Second post is very informative.

The advice about trying to avoid currency risk is something I want to heed but I'm finding it quite difficult to find Euro based ETF's (googling brings back a lot of dollar based ETF's that track European markets)
I have also found for example ETF's on the German stock exchange that track the top performing German stocks. Is that essentially what I'm limiting myself to (and all other Euro based exchanges)? Or are there ETF's that are sold in Euro but say track the S&P 500?

Ishares and db-x trackers have plenty of euro denominated etfs. To totally avoid currency risk you must buy euro denominated etfs which are made up of stocks of from euro currency regions i.e a euro denominated etf of S+P 500 will carry a euro/dollar currency risk. iShares have currency hedged etfs which eliminate currency risk. Note also that dividends from etfs are a tax nightmare, therefore get accumulating etfs where dividends are reinvested automatically.
