Hi guys how would I go about changing the owner of a deceased persons car. We have no log book or registration papers ad we cannot find them. The car is in my fathers name and want it transferred into my name(the son). I'M thinking my mother would would have to do this. Do she need to get a new log book and registration certificate or would just a registration certificate do. She has to take a few hours off work to get this done and doesnt want to mess up or can I do it myself, tks

What's the difference between a log book and registration document as well. Do you need both to transfer car into someone else's name, tks

https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/pdf/RF134-English.pdf is the form you need.

i think a new form VLC is like €8.

it's not strictly legit. if it were me, i'd just fill in your dads details, bring the form to the garda station, explain the situation and they will stamp it. then when you receive the re-issued logbook in your dads name just fill out the change of ownership to yourself.

log book, registration cert and VLC are all different terms for the same thing.

First of all sorry for your loss OP.

The easiest way to do this without the existing registration cert (not the legit way though) is download and fill out the RF134 - Replacement Vehicle Registration form from motortax.ie on your late father's behalf. Bring it to your local Garda Station to be stamped and then drop it in at your local Motor Tax Office who will charge you €12. Shannon will then post a replacement Vehicle Registration Cert with your late father's name on it. When your mother receives this then you can fill out the change of ownership section and send it off to Shannon who will transfer ownership to you and issue you a new Vehicle Registration Certificate in your name.

If you do have the existing Registration Cert then the following is the legit way of doing it:

Change of ownership - Registered Owner Deceased

For vehicles registered prior to 01/01/1993
If husband or wife was registered owner but now deceased. MTO will change
vehicle ownership into spouse’s name on production of a death certificate and brown logbook.

    For vehicles registered after 01/01/1993
Complete back of VLC/VRC with spouses name, address, enter date of sale and enter spouses signature as buyer and forward the certificate to Shannon with copy of death certificate.

BTW log book and Vehicle Registration Cert are the normally the same thing.

the whole process should be done in under 28 days i'd say... it takes around 14 days for a logbook to be issued, which you will essentially be waiting for twice. once you have posted away the transfer of ownership in your own name you should be safe to insure/ drive the car yourself.

    sorry for your loss also.

Is this normal in Ireland that spouse inherits everything after deceased person?
    What about the children?

Yea if there is no will, but the children can appoint an administrator lawyer type person to make sure everything is split accordingly if no will
