Ok I've been trying to get a reasonable quote for comp car insurance for myself + herself recently without much success. All over 1200euro so far.

Can anyone recommend a good broker or insurance provider?

I know everyone's particulars are different so I'm just looking for some first hand experiences from people who experienced good value. Thanks

wouldn't bother with the RSA anyway...
    http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/drivers-hit-with-13pc-insurance-increase-29730390.html
RSA Insurance, which owns 123.ie, said it pushed up premiums by 13pc in Ireland this year.

You need to try every insurance company and a good selection of brokers. Forget about online quotes, call them. The best deal for me came from AXA this time around, but it tends to be a different company almost every year.
This is poor advice, RSA might still offer the most competitive quote.

Can you be a bit more specific about "myself + herself"? Age, license type, experience, NCB etc.

AA gave me a good deal - 500 for fully comp on a 2.5ltr petrol with "herself" on it and she had a claim against her 3 yrs ago i didnt think they would put her on it. The policy also has the full AA breakdown memebership. I figured it was good as 123.ie wanted 890 to insure me on the 2.5ltr. I was a customer of 123.ie when they quoted me that so i got the quote off the AA and went for that.

still a better deal than I was offered by AXA when I got my license - e3400 for 3rd party. quinn quoted me e1700 for the same (2 peeps on prov, 1.6)

I hear you! When I applied for my first policy they wanted 2,700 for 1.2 fiesta even though I was 23 with a full licence. Unreal how they get business so I went to FBD and got a quote of 1,400.

I use http://www.coverinaclick.ie/ - about 3 years ago I had a high performance car which only XS Direct would quote me on, no others would touch me. I actually posted on here and the sales manager of this place is a boardsie and he gave me a cracking quote. I've switched car since then but still they give me a miles better quote than anyone else.

When an insurance company gives you an uncompetitive quote it doesn't mean that they're an expensive company, it just means that they're not interested in taking on your particular risk profile. They'll quote competitively for the business they want. This is why recommending 'cheap' insurance companies makes no sense.

Insurance is the biggest con we all buy into its as bad a betting on the horses.

Prices are set by what the market will bear and insurance companies have all sorts of risk calculations vs profit. They will also exploit loyalty knowing.we don't like to shop around.

Best you can do is go to the market each and every year at renewal time and price around.

It might even be cheaper to list your partner as main driver.

But phone around and don't be afraid to tell insurance companies you have a better price elsewhere and ask them to better it.

    Go forth and haggle

I'm going to assume that you're both 18, on provisional licenses, and looking for insurance on a Lexus?

As mentioned, different insurers are cheaper for different risk profiles.
For me, britton insurance brokers seem to be the cheapest, doesnt stop me shopping around before renewal time each year to be sure though:)

Would you drive uninsured if it were allowed? Would you be happy to take the risk on yourself of causing a multiple car accident and having to pay for all the damages to the cars and possibly people too?

Get of your horse and drink some milk cowboy.
    Never said I drive uninsured.

Insurance cost are over the top because insurance companies have a captive market with little competition

And you know the answer to" if it wasn't a legal requirement to have insurance " few if any would pay inflated prices. But then insurance companies would realise that and make insurance cheaper. But it is a legal requirement so little point discussing what if.

How do you figure that? THere are at least 13 insurance companies that do motor insurance. So its not a lack of competition!

Funny that, 123 sent me through my renewal yesterday Same car, cover, address everything exact same. Went from €265 - €490??? Makes no sense at all. How could they justify that hike. Needless to say further corespondance will be ignored by me. The most irritating thing I find each year is the increase policy for company A - I then go get a cheaper quote from company B. Company A rings and I tell them the lower quote, within seconds they can now suddenly match the lower quote. Its a total waste of time and effort. I will always tell company A to f%$k off and say if they could have done it for that price then, thats what they should have quoted me in the first place.

    But €265 - €490 is shocking = 85% increase.

123 gave me a very competitive quote. 627, 28, full no claims, Astra Sri cdti. Only company to beat it were fbd. Whom I found very good to deal with. Got a bit extra discount because house/farm insurance with them also

Out of curiosity do people find the likes of chill who "compare the price of 14 different insurers" cheaper than going to the insurer directly?

Not always, no. Ive used some of those types of brokers in the past, and then gone direct to the insurer and gotten a better quote than the broker was offering.

And in my personal experience as a former 123.ie customer, avoid them like the plague. They are a disaster, e.g. demands for premiums and admin fees already paid (and 123.ie receipts issued), incorrect car details on insurance cert & disc at renewal time (wrong reg, wrong make, wrong model) new certs, disc etc not issued for weeks beyond renewal date with premium paid in full in advance, etc etc. etc.

    Stay away from 123.ie.

My parents are with RSA and it's brilliant value and the policy is fully comp.

But RSA does not sell their policies themselves (unless it changed recently), so you still have to go the broker route (that includes Tesco etc)

It was through McCarthy's insurance. They offered them various policies but RSA was the cheapest/offered best value for money.
