2002 BMW E39 520i automatic gearbox problem

    Hey guys,

I recently bought a 2002 E39 520i with just under 130,000 miles on the clock. The car is in very good condition with only one previous owner and a full service history with a reputable garage here in Dublin.

The problem is that when the car is changing from 3rd to 4th it looses power, almost as if it's in to high a gear, this lasts for only 2 or 3 seconds and then i get a kick from behind, or so it feels like anyway. I'm not a mechanic but they best way I can explain it is it's like as if it's changing gear but not engaging properly, hence they lack of power and then when It does engage I get the kick or the shudder from behind.
Could you please tell me what exactly is wrong with the car, I have read a lot of forums and posts, they mention the torque soleniod failing and need replacing, or could just be the transmission is on the way out.
Please note the transmission in the car is very smooth when changing up and down, it seems fairly tight, reverse gear is smooth and it doesnt always lose power when changing between 3rd and 4th however the problem does seem to be getting more frequent.
Apart from this the automatic gearbox is faultless, I would hate to have to get it rebuilt if it only needs a soleniod.

Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks

First step is to check the transmission fluid condition and level.
This isn't as easy for BMWs as for many other cars as BMW didn't bother with a dipstick for trans fluid.
For BMW you need to get car lifted up level and open the fill plug with engine running.

I'd get it to a mechanic (or DIY) to do a "drain and fill" where the old fluid is replaced with fresh trans fluid.
For your age car I would not do a "flush", just a drain/fill.
