Wondering if anyone will be able to advise me. I had a job short term over the summer left and started a new job in September. I received my p45 but never gave it to my new employers as I never mentioned my previous job. Now it appears I'm being taxes almost half of my wages. I've been told I'm being emergency taxed by friends, is this correct? How can I fix this and will I get any of that money back? :(

Well if you give your P45 to your employer you can get your credits transferred over and the overpaid tax will be refunded to you.

Thanks for your help! Is there anyway I can do this without involving my employer?

Yes. I assume you don't want the new employer to know previous pay details?

Ring the tax office and request a tax cert for new employment. You will need Employer's No (should be on payslip).

If you don't want the current employer to know your previous PAY & Tax details, ask them to issue the TAX Credit Cert on a "week one basis." This will allow them tax you as normal for each week from the date of receipt of the new Cert. Obviously, not giving the new employer previous details, will mean that any tax overpaid for recent weeks cannot be reclaimed until after 31/12/2013 through Revenue when you get your P60.

To get a refund of tax from emergency basis, a cumulative cert (as oppose to week 1 cert) will need to issue on the basis that current employer is taking into account previous pay & tax.

    Thanks for that!
Haven't been able to get in touch with the tax office yet as they only take calls from 13.30-17.00 :/
Heard something about a 12a form would that be any use to me?

The tax office line is open from 9.15 - 17.00 Monday - Friday.

If the summer job was your first ever and you've never done a Form 12A you will need to do one before you bother ringing them though, as you will not have a file with Revenue until you send in the 12A.

Print the form off revenue.ie and post it in to your local office.

    Thanks for the help.

I was able to get through to Revenue today who are updated me to a week 1 basis. They also asked me to post my p45 to them and it should all be sorted. Was told if they have it processed before the ny I will get the tax back then if its after it might be the end of jan when I get my p60
