Finder repeatedly crashing in Mavericks

This is a solution, not a request for a solution!!! Just in case others are having this problem.
I installed Mavericks on release day and everything was fine until yesterday when the finder began crashing and restarting. I thought I had a hard drive failure issue and was more than a little concerned.
I discovered that a lot of others have had this issue and most wasted a lot of time doing reinstalls etc.
It turns out the problem is caused by Google Drive. Disabling Google Drive via the taskbar icon resolves it immediately.
