    Looking for inspiration on a day you don't feel like running.

    This is probably one of the great great races that Lasse Viren performed in. A fantastic champion doing everything to keep the wolves at bay. Almost matched his 5,000m final in 1976 but not to be.
    He retired after the race but each athlete at the limit of their physical effort.

    Amazing that those Finns who were at the top of the world back in the 70s can't even produce a half decent distance runner who can compete at European level nowaday, despite the average standard of men's European distance running. The mind boggles...

    While I know what you're getting at and acknowledge that questions will probably always remain particularly given the admission on Viren's team mate it's worth noting that Lydiard had a coaching role in Finland and his presence more or less coincided with their success. I'd also note that we (Ireland) used to produce better distance runners and in greater quantities than we do now. There are a whole range of factors that feed into that reality and I can't imagine that at least some of those are not in play for Finland too.
