Nexus 10 questions

I currently have an iPad2 at the moment, but next year I'm hoping to go travelling for six months. Ideally I'd like to take a tablet which would allow me to able to stream from websites which require plugins (ie to watch footy or the RTE Player [the programs available internationally of course]), be decent to use for reading books and have the abilty to stick in a USB drive to watch movies already downloaded or to play music. Is the Nexus 10 a good choice for this? The iPad is fine for checking the internet etc but its pretty limited with regards memory and what you can stream so I'd be looking to trade that in. Haven't a clue with regards operating systems which arent IOS so any advice would be appreciated.

Of course on an Android forum everyone is going to be a bit biased, but...

I have had a few Android tablets and have just upgraded from a Nexus 7 to a 10 with no regrets.
You will find a few advantages over an iPad (and a few disadvantages I am sure). Additional USB storage is a breeze, but you will need what is called an OTG cable (On The Go) to attch a multitude of USB devices. They will allow use of not just usb memory sticks but keyboards/mice/etc if you desire.
When you say plugins to use RTE player etc I'm unsure what you mean, but the Android community is very large and if you want something it will be there. The RTE player app from the Play Store works fine on the Nexus 10 (just downloaded and tried it out).

For books there are a few different ways to read...from a Kindle app to PDF readers galore. Music and movie players is the same situation..spoiled for choice.

    Umm....sold yet? :D

I can't fault the nexus 10 at all tbh. It's been utterly faultless for me and the battery life is excellent.

Does the external hard drive need to be one which you plug into a power source before attaching it to the tablet or can the nexus 10 power the external hardrive itself via USB/mini USB?

The usb port would not provide enough power for any external hard drive.

Reading online I seem to get conflicting reports, some saying I can attach a external drive others saying it won't have the power..

I have one of these type of Seagate ones. I know I'd need an USB OTG cable anyway

Apparently some do work but depends on the hard drive..

This link gives a few setup tips on external storage http://www.diyphotography.net/using-nexus-10-photo-store-hub-travel

It mentions that using usb 3.0 cables causes it to fail and I note that the drive you linked to is usb 3.0. Let me just add I have not tried to power any drive from the Nexus and I'm thinking that if you did the battery drain would be pretty steep.

I have found no conclusive posts that have had success powering any external drive without additional power. Thats not to say there is none, I'm just too lazy to search further :D

Cheers man, mines actually a slightly older model with USB 2.0. Seems like a bit of hard work this!

I reckon a 2.99 otg cable and a few cheap but high capacity usb sticks should give you capacity to spare.

    Edit...cheap and local... http://www.ebay.ie/itm/TOSHIBA-64GB-USB-Stick-Flash-Drive-Pen-Drive-UHYBS-064GH-New-Sealed-SALE-/151156045982?pt=UK_Computing_Other_Computing_Networking&hash=item23319a389e

Ya the OTG cables works great with memory sticks, but I can't see it working with hard drives that require external power. I used to have a portable hard drive so could test that, but I lost it somewhere it seems (or more likely loaned it to someone who forgot they had it when I asked them). It'll probably turn up in a few years.

I was going to ask of anyone had got it as yet. I'm rooted with a custom rom so I'll have to wait until that is updated.
