I currently drive a Mitsubishi ASX which I love.... but.....

Its a big car, whilst I do need a diesel don't necessarily need the size...:)

So............I'm looking for suggestions for a mid-size diesel car with 1.6L diesel engine or above - now it has to have a hatchback or similar as I need to fit a bike in there too! It has to have a good bit of power too!:)

    TIA

Whenever I hear 1.6 and diesel I would usually suggest a peugeot 407 hdi

    How about a Vw Golf?

I think the OP needs to specify a budget, otherwise we can look at anything from 1.9 SDI golfs to 5.0 V10 TDI Tourags.

The ASX has the stonking 150ps Mitsubishi 1.8TD engine. OP will struggle to find anything with that ooomph from a 1.6d engine.

Looking at a 2.0 diesel from any other manufacturer, or a big drop in performance. ASX isn't really that big either. Roughly Golf size on the inside, just looks a bit bigger from the outside.

Volvo V50 is the estate version of the S40.

Available in 1.6, 2.0,2.5 diesel afaik 04+ is the newer model

Focus comes in a 1.6 diesel to 06+

Is the ASX all that bigger than what has been mentioned above? The ASX is a medium sized crossover similar to a Nissan Qashqai. I don't think you are making much of a downsize to the likes of an Octavia or Golf. The ASX might be taller with a bit more ground clearance but not that longer or bigger than them in reality.

The new ASX only has 116ps... (whatever that is?) But I do know its power related so the higher the better!

If I accepted a drop in performance (which I'd have to do obviously) what should I look for to give me reasonable performance please... you can give me the techie bits - if there is English explanations! :-)

Pferdestärke. German DIN horsepower which is near-enough the same as one Metric Horsepower, 75 kgf-m/s or 735 watts.

From another forum behind whose bike sheds I hang around beating up less-nerdy kids and taking their lunch money:

The DIN figure is 1.38% higher than the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers, North America) BHP. Power output in kilowatts is 74.57% of the SAE BHP figure.

The kilowatt is now the official, blessed unit of automotive engine output in Europe, although DIN and SAE brake-horsepower figures are still commonly quoted by vehicle manufacturers as people tend to be more familiar with these units.

By the way, the reason for the small discrepancy between the two is that the SAE measurement is in mechanical horsepower (550 ft.lbs./s) and the DIN PS measurement is in metric horsepower (75 kgf-m/s). These evaluate to slightly different wattages.

And while we're at it, SAE BHP==(torque*RPM)/5252.11. For DIN PS, change 5252.11 to 5180.49.

Working back the other way is left as an exercise for the reader.

    :D

    BHP = torque [Nm] * RPM * (1/60) * 2 * pi

Now we have the science out of the way......

Kia C'eed would be a bit smaller. 1.6d isn't as powerful as the 1.8Td in the Mitsubishi, but does feel like a nippy little thing. Comes as a 3dr hatch/coupe, 5dr Hatch or the SW Estate. Hyundai i30 is the same vehicle underneath, but look for the 1.6 version as the 1.4 is a bit dead.

If you want performance go 1.8 or above.

Any 1.6 iv tried felt perky at low speeds but are dead higher up

Any change you make will cost you money so if the niggling worry that the car is too big is all that bugs you then don't worry.
You'll either end up with a lesser car for the same money or a similar car for more money - either way you'll lose.

I think actually, that I'm going to keep the car till the lease is finished...! cause you are soooooo right - and, at the moment, I don't feel like losing!!!!

    So............decision made!:)

Edited to add, I like the performance of this car too, so don't feel like compromising their either!!!
