Gaming PC Build Suggestion & Questions

    Hi there,

I'm looking for a high-end gaming PC build. I built my old gaming PC myself back in 2007 but haven't had much time for gaming in the last few years, only recently had the time and resources to get back into it and I'm pretty rusty. I have to admit I was tempted to just order one from Alienware or something, but reading on this forum and elsewhere has made it clear that sites like Hardwareversand offer vastly better value for money and so on.

Anyway, I'd welcome any general build suggestions from more experienced people so I'll fill out the standard form, but I also have a few specific questions regarding hardwareversand in particular.

    1. What is your budget? €1000-1500

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming. I'm looking for something as high performance as reasonably possible, more for future-proofing than for any particular game.

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes. I'd prefer Windows 7 over 8 as I'd like to run some older games/programs, which seems to get harder as your OS is newer.

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? Unfortunately no.

    5. Do you need a monitor? Not right now.

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? Pretty old and basic monitor, I'll upgrade it in a few months.

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Keyboard, mouse, sound card, wireless.

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Shouldn't be necessary.

    8. How can you pay? [Bank Transfer/Credit Card/Laser] Any of these.

    9. When are you purchasing? Hopefully in the next month or so.

I also have a couple of specific questions. Firstly, are there many major differences/ramifications in the choice between CPU (e.g. Intel v AMD) or GPU (Nvidia vs ATI), aside from the issue of mainboard compatibility? I realise that's a very open-ended and maybe controversial question, but I haven't payed attention to hardware in a while, and I'm finding it difficult to choose. With graphics card for example, are there significant performance/compatibility differences between manufacturers, or are two cards of similar price generally comparable in performance?

Secondly, I explored the hardwareversand PC-Configurator based on the recommendations on this board and it seems like great value. I notice they currently offer assembly for only 5 euro, is this legit? I know it's not really that difficult (and there's something to be said for self-assembly being far more rewarding) but I'd be strongly inclined to save time and pay and expert if it's really that cheap.

Thirdly, I'm wondering about the heat situation. I'm looking for something pretty high-end so obviously heat is a concern, and I'm surprised that the hardwareversand configurator doesn't say much about this - there's a space to order a CPU fan but it notes that all my chosen options already have one, and it doesn't say anything about case fans or heat sinks or whatever, the implication being that it's not a big issue. Am I missing something?

Thanks for your time, any advice is appreciated. :)
