Lack of diesel cars for sale

I currently have an 06 vectra and am looking to change it for something different. Because of time constraints I need to trade in (I know I'd save more by selling my own privately), I'm open minded about what I change to, I was hoping to spend a couple of grand and maybe change up a year or even stay at 06. Today I visited ever car garage in Carlow and Kilkenny and all I could find anywhere close to budget was an 07 focus (trading mine plus €3.5k) or a 07 passat (trading mine plus €4.5k). Does anyone have an explanation for the lack of diesel cars for sale below the year 2008.

    Any insights appreciated

There wasn't that many diesels sold prior to the tax rates moving to favouring the "super Eco friendly" diesels.
Also most diesels sold prior to 2008 still charge a pretty penny.
Much better bargains in petrol engined cars if you can afford to run them.

Is the vectra diesel. If it is I really couldn't see the point in giving 3.5k with a 06 vectra to get a 07 focus. But then if you want to change. For some reason them vectras never seem to get a high trade in value and their a great car.

Petrol cars are for nothing at the min but I'm doing 100 miles a day so it really has to be diesel unfortunately

It does seen mad but I have very high mileage on the vectra (dealers are still allowing me between 2500 and 3300 for it)

Ah I suppose if it has high mileage that would cause them to drop there trade in price abit. The focus would be a bit smaller than the vectra though the passat would be more comparable. I suppose the best thing you can do is just drive a few cars and see which you prefer. I'm from Kilkenny and would agree dealers have very little in the line of secondhand diesels you may have to look further a field to other counties.

Yeah in that case it's definitely a diesel.
If the vectra is a diesel, I'd be keeping it until it became uneconomical to repair.

Good clean diesel cars don't hang around on forecourts long and they fetch good money.

Being honest if there is nothing wrong with the Vectra then the best thing to do is keep it until it dies. You know it's history whereas you could be buying someone else's problem.

Put it on LPG and keep it so ,it's not the most valuable to trade in at the moment.

    Absolutely !

I found a 2003 Volvo S80 for my brother and it's a big comfortable cruiser for doing 100 miles a day in and at 30 mpg on lpg works out about 53 mpg in diesel or more if you get more mpg.

LPG can be got currently in Kildare in Kilcullen for 77.9 c/l or 72.9 if you convert with them.

SO he paid 2100 for a well minded car in very good condition, very comfortable and a gem of a engine, 2.0T 180 hp 5 cylinder. I got to admit I hated getting into the Prius after, not that it's a bad car.

The Volvo's take lpg really well and fords I believe.

So much value in 2nd hand petrols it's amazing, diesel is not necessary, and imo a sacrifice I'm not willing to put up with any more.

Op if you want seriously cheap motoring then a Prius on lpg works out about 80-85 mpg !

To convert the Volvo would be about 1400 Euro's, pay back depends on how much you save over your current car, it could also be converted for about 1000 for 4 cylinder engines.

Anyway the point is , it's not just fuel to consider but depreciation and interest on a loan, if economy is what you want, it doesn't come much cheaper.

Personally I wouldn't buy another VW in a hurry again.

Former colleague had an 04 petrol Vectra and still does, the 1.6 l. Super reliable car and very good on fuel which may surprise many here. 40-45mpg. They've had it for years and drive daily between KK and Athy. Most diesels wouldn't do a lot better than that plus the added and very real risk of massive repair bills. They are a very good car and ver unfairly under-rated imo.

works out about 53 mpg in diesel.

Ah that's how you're getting close to 40 mpg in that yoke Mad Lad!

I was reading your thread yesterday and I didn't want to say anything but when you said you'd get close to 40 mpg from a big S80 two liter I thought you were smoking something!

Don't know why it didn't click with me that its not a petrol!

    No the S80 is petrol ! ;)

I just meant in the highlighted text above that if converted to lpg, then the conversion works out about the same as a 53 mpg diesel. You got a pay back period first though.

However I didn't have it long enough to know what I may get on average over say 300-400 miles per tank.

Irishtown to Naas isn't that far but I though 37 mpg and having heavy traffic wasn't too bad.

See there are better cars on fuel such as a prius on lpg would be the cheapest car on the road bar electric, however I would drive the S80 on lpg which would be a little more expensive to run than the Prius, I could live with that, and the 300 a year extra motor tax, I really likes the S80.

I wouldn't be paying interest nor suffer depreciation, so I can suffer a bit more motor tax and a reduction in economy.

    Oh it is petrol? OOPS!

That's a great return for a 10 year old petrol with such a heavy body. Sounds like your brother has unearthed a little gem there.

    Well wear!

Cheers, I don't know if it's my prius driving skills that helped but driving the S80 hard won't return that figure I'm sure and i didn't go over 60 mph, but I did get caught in some nasty traffic.

I don't know if my brother will get that as he has a heavy foot and won't know himself with 2 extra cylinders, that corsa engine is rubbish, they should be ashamed for making such crap !
