    Hi,

I have a mackbook pro 15 inch about 4 years old running 10.6.8.

I have 10GB free on my hard drive but the longer i leave the computer on something seems to be eating up the memory. I've had it on for 2 days now and theres only 3.83GB left. As soon as i restart i'm back to having 10 gigs.

Anyone know what could be causing this?

    Thanks,

    Pockets.

You need a bigger hard disk ! Sounds like logging and Virtual memory is using the available space. Either way you should really do some housekeeping and free up some space on the drive or get a larger capacity one.

If it is the swap file I'd recommend getting more RAM as well. How much is currently installed?

2.4 ghz processor and 4GB of RAM. 500GB hard drive

How come this is only becoming an issue now. I've often had less space on the computer and it never filled up like this?

Thanks for the replies by the way.

Difficult to say without knowing what's running on your machine. Try Activity Monitor to see what's running and using up drive space.

I love this app, well worth the $13

    http://www.whatsizemac.com/

It will find the culprit for you very easily (I'd say it's a log file)

Are you leaving it connected to the internet and downloading songs/movies/bigfiles in the background?

Is there an app running riot writing huge chunks of data?

Do you know how to check running processes using the Activity monitor in the Utilities folder? Click the "Disk" button and let it run for a while.

Click the "Bytes Written" column to sort in descending order, then take a screenshot, post it here and we might spot something.

Or use Disc Inventory X which is free.
