Is the taxsaver ticket worth it for weekday returns from Bray to town?

The taxsaver monthly ticket works out at €134/month but I can't see a five day ticket costing any more than €30 per week.

I don't see myself using the DART outside of weekday so is the "taxsaver" just gonna do bugger all for me as a commuter?

fare capping is coming in at €35.50 per week with the leap card on irish rail, which would equate to €142 max per month, but you're flexible in terms transport modes also.

So depending on how you use it could work out cheaper. Not sure how much it is from bray to town.

Edit its 2.75 one way, 5.50 return Bray to connolly, assuming youre in 5 days a week its 27.5 x 4 = 110 per month with the leap

€134 per month is pre-tax relief price.

At the top rate of tax, it'll be €64 a month (or so). Lower rate it'll be €92 or so.

The €134 is the gross figure - you wont pay tax or PRSI on that part of your wages, which is where the savings come from. If you paying top rate of tax, it works out around €65 for the month, not €134.

    1. your employer buys the ticket for you.
    2. they deduct the cost from your pre-tax salary
    3. as you don't pay tax on that bit of your salary the net cost to you is either 20% or 41% less than the actual cost of buying the ticket yourself.

So if you're on the top rate of tax, you'll only see your salary reduced by €69.68 per month...
