Poor running Passat

For the last week my 1.9TDI Passat has been running badly. It is down about 10mpg and when cruising along it feels like you are taking your foot off the accelerator and putting it back on. I've checked the air flow meter and it's not that and I only replaced the egr valve a year ago. Any ideas what could be the problem? It has also got a lot more smokey since this problem appeared.

    thanks.

What model passat? Does it have a DPF?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 662 ✭✭✭selfbuilder1

    It's a 2004 1.9tdi 130 bhp. No DPF.

So that rules out the DPF as the cause, inconsistent revs, increased smoke and worse economy could have been caused by a clogged DPF.

    What color is the smoke?

Try fuel filter. Any air in the system.?

Would a hole in the turbo hose or intercooler hose cause these symtoms?

    Yes

What would be the easiest way to find the hole in the hose?

A smoke test is a good way or visual inspection. The way you worded your post i thought you'd already found a hole. :D

Sight. The turbo hoses were easy to see in my mk4 tdi golf, I assume that the passat is similarly designed

Thanks for all the help. The problem was a split in the hose for the turbo to intercooler. Any idea where I could pick one up at a reasonable price?
