Problems with dentist

Apologies mods/folks for resurrecting a zombie but I could have written the OP(well almost!).

Was going to start my own thread about the subject but searched a bit before and found this thread(among similar ones).

    My story is this,
Needed to see the dentist for a cosmetic procedure(nothing that was causing pain etc). Had the appointment and was told I needed 3 fillings(one of which that was already filled). NONE of these teeth were a problem or painful etc as the two unfilled teeth were pin prick decay marks.
Dentist told me he couldn't do the cosmetic work(a crown that was no where near any of these teeth) until the 3 fillings were done. So I said fine as long as they were done at the same time as the crown(terrified of dentists )

Get the work done 4 weeks ago and the filling in the tooth that already had a filling in it is killing me, the nerve is buggered. Can't touch the top tooth off it or anything hot or cold sends it mad.

So last week was talking to a mate of mine. He tells me he was at the dentist(went in for a clean and polish) and the dentist tells him he needs 2 fillings, one of which is already filled.
Gets the fillings done, 2 days later in agony. Goes back and is told you need a root canal. Gets it done and gets a temp filling in, 500 euro.

Yesterday, I'm chatting with a cousin and during the course of conversation I tell him about my toothache.
He had a filling done in September(again a tooth that was causing no problem) and after it was in agony. Went back to the dentist and guess what?
Yep, root canal 400 euro. he said he had no choice but to get it done as it was incredibly painful.

So what I would like to know is how common is this practice of filling/refilling teeth that then become unbearably painful enough to warrant you forking out a LOT of money to rectify a problem that wasn't a problem before hand?

I would alos like to add, I have had 4 previos fillings done over the years(last one was 13 years ago and was a biggie) and NEVER had to have root canal done for any of them. My partner has had 7 fillings done over the years and they have never had root canal for a single one.

Sorry its a long post but tbh I'm pretty bloody livid as I dont have 500 for root canal that I didn't need 4 weeks ago before the dentist went near my teeth.

About 3 years ago I had to get 3 filings, 1 was still sore after a month and like you I was told I needed root canal treatment. There is no easy I could pay for it so I told the dentist to take the tooth out.

She really didn't want to as she thought the tooth was in good condition, she got another opinion from another dentist and they decided they would she would re fill the tooth.
I wasn't charged and I haven't had any issues since.

I posted it in consumer issues as I saw other thread similar to this and they were moved to consumer issues

I was just curious to see how many people that this was happening with as I have personally had 3 in almost as many weeks.
I am not debating negligence etc and think this is more of a consumer issue so can it be moved back please mods

    Thanks

When teeth get their first filling if caught early there is no problem, however teeth that have recurrent decay and need refilling often have deeper decay closer to the nerve of the tooth.

Its the damn decay that's the problem. In the US dentists generally jump straight into root canals at the slightest sign of trouble. In Ireland dentists try to do their best to avoid root canals where possible.

The tooth that was refilled was not causing me any problems at all(pain etc).
It was not the reason that I attended the dentist but was told the cosmetic work that I wanted(and that was nowhere near this filled tooth)done would not be done until I had all 3 fillings(one already filled and wasn't deep and not causing a problem, the other 2 had a tiny pin prick sized dot of decay but were not causing me a problem)Now after the dental work, they are causing a problem.
I had posted this in CI as if you read my post this seems to be becoming a common thing among dental customers and have asked for it to be moved back there.
Also, myself and my partner have 11 fillings between us(none done in recent years). A couple would be deep on my partner and never was there an expensive root canal needed afterwards.
If you can move it back I would be grateful.
    Thanks

What reason was the tooth refilled for, seeing as the ci mod move this here we can be sure he doesn't want this thread there.

I have no idea why it was moved to here tbh as I am not looking for a dental opinion etc.
I wanted to know how many other people have had the same issue as I already said I myself, a friend and a cousin have had the exact same problem with root canals needing to be done after teeth that were causing no problem were re-filled. And having had a browse through other posts came across some very similar situations.
Incidentally, I did not start a thread in CI but responded to one the was almost identical to my situation(I didn't name this thread either)as you can tell from the op here.
I gave the situations that caused me to post ie my cousin and friend.

You asked why was the tooth refilled?
    I have no idea.
It was not cracked or painful in any way. When I asked the dentist why he was refilling it his answer was "because it needs it".
I am a lay person who put my trust in my dentist, like everyone else.
But when you hear of other people having the same problem, I think questions need to be asked.

Also cannot understand why the CI mods would not want this thread there as there are many threads in there regarding dentist/costs/problems etc??

Ok then, I will lock this up here as you don't require dental input. You can contact the ci mod and ask if the thread can be moved.
