Wifi trouble - first was fine, now terrible

    Hey,
Got a new UPC connection about a week ago. On the first day, the connection was great, getting around 50mb on speedtest.net, and was performing brilliantly for the entire day.

After the first day unfortunately, the connection has been terrible 80% of the time, not holding, and giving a worse than dial up speed when it is connected.

Another Macbook using the same connection is totally fine, it just seems to be my Macbook. So I'm assuming it's my Mac rather than the connection.

Any ideas what I can do to resolve this?

    Thank you

Turn off WiFi, restart the router, restart the Mac, rejoin the network. Any better?

Ring UPC and ask them to assist you with changing the WiFi channel. or if you are familiar with doing this yourself then go ahead and do it.

Sometimes when UPC push a firmware update it can change the WiFi channel to a default, and your neighbours get this too so you end up with a congested channel.

If you need an individual rep that you can keep going back to, to guide you through the process then you can use the Talk To UPC forum here on boards.

Sometimes when you are on the phone you can end up getting shunted from one person to another for ages before finding the right person and if you have to call them again you may not get the same person next time.

    Hi again,
I rang UPC after these troubles began and they did some reconfigurations on their end, and everything was grand for the past couple of weeks.

Today however, it's started acting up again.

Oddly, Skype is able to connect but nothing else. I read through a few forums about this and someone suggested trying to ping the Google IP address, which I was able to do, and apparently if that's the case it's a DNS problem.

I'm not sure what the next step should be in my case, if anyone has any thoughts I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks
