Arduino kit for kids

    Hi

Young fella is 11, has had lego mindstorms for a while but wants to move to arduino. Was going to get him a starter kit for Christmas - any suggestions?

I was looking at the one on the arduino site, currently out of stock

    http://arduino.cc/en/Main/ArduinoStarterKit

    - any other possibilities? Would prefer one like that with the book and projects and all relevant bits - tbh I don't have time right now to be teaching myself all about it so that I know what to get him, ikwim - so just wondering which one to go for, just to get started, and then we'll teach ourselves as we go! I can help with the coding but would prefer not to get into soldering etc from day 1.

    Thanks!

That is absolutely not what he wants!

This kit: http://oomlout.co.uk/collections/arduino/products/arduino-starter-kit-ardx is exactly whats needed to get started with the arduino. Lots of different parts and guides for a few simple projects using those parts. It also has overlays for the breadboard to make wiring that bit easier.

Yes think it's more the oomlout one that he wants. We already considered a raspberry pi a while back for coderdojo but that would have meant lugging a monitor around etc so we went with a laptop.

But yes, oomlout one looks good - have to compare it to the one on the arduino site as it could well come back in stock - I may be back with more questions - thanks!!

I actually got one of these some time ago. Very good step by step through the different projects!

This next one is interesting too, but probably not suitable for a first kit. Maybe if he outgrows the one above:

That one is a bit over-budget for Christmas and also in case he doesn't stick with it but will definitely keep it in mind for later on. Thanks!

Quite looking forward to getting stuck into this myself!!

Just to say, I went with the oomlaut one, as there was no sign of the arduino "official" one coming back in stock on their site and it was expensive everywhere else. The oomlaut one gave the option also of buying the actual board separately so I went with a leonardo rather than an uno. It arrived today and looks great, in a little plastic box for holding everything. Have also ordered 3 different books so we better get into this now!
