Is this a standard process that can be done without any special tools? I have done this on a few cars in the past without issue but the reason I ask is that I ran into problems changing the pads on a Renault where I needed a special tool to open the callipers in order to get them back on with the new pads. thanks

All four or just fronts?
You need torx to remove the bolts.

Depending on the handbrake setup, you may need a windback tool, although it can be done with, e.g. a tool for opening an angle grinder or chop saw etc

As cletus said, a tool for opening an angle grinder disc bolt would probably do.. I've used a needle-nose pliers in the past to wind them back - if they're moving freely
