Lads I've found out that I can licence a firearm in oz even tho I'm on a holiday / working visa , my question is how hard is it to get it home ,

Can I travel with it and swap it over when I get home , or do I need a import export permit ?

Ok I will be the first to ask.

Is it really worth the hassle of the whole Import/Export, cost of doing so, even finding a Courier or Freight Company to even touch it, if it were me I would buy something for under $1000 and leave it in with a Dealer when you go

The Sporting Shooters Association of Australia might be able to advise if you do go down the road of binging it back yo Ireland, but for me it would have to be one spectacular Rifle to do that, http://www.ssaa.org.au

A good site to price things.

The only thing in your favour over there is that a lot of Bogans are dumping their toys so you might be able to pick up a bargain if you look hard enough

I did it a few years ago, not really worth the trouble. Had to get it shipped to the firearms dealer in the UK and then to a firearms dealer in Ireland.
Import licence, shipping costs , 6 month wait... If I had to do it again I would had sold the firearm in Australia.

Aside from the paperwork issue ( applying for Irish licence and import licence from the DOJ and whatever Australian paperwork is needed to export ) is there not an option of bringing the gun as hold luggage on your return flights to Ireland ?

It is not illegal nor impossible to check in a licenced firearm as luggage on a flight but there aren't that many airline companies who still provide the service, given that you comply with their terms and conditions Etihad for example provides this service ( as per their website ).

I doubt it as when you land you will be illegally holding a firearm here.

Would you be able to apply for your license before you even return.

You can't land in Ireland with an Australian license and expect to be legal which is what you asked.

If its under this type of license you will be able to land and work away but then I presume with that type of license the firearm has to return within a certain time frame. I'd say it will still need import paper work to license it here.

It could be easyer alright but I reckon time might be your enemy. Not sure if you could just leave it in an RFD if the import paper work isn't in order.

you need an import licence if bringing a firearm into the country for good, the department of justice need to have a record of it entering the country. And I am sure you need an export licence in oz as you do in evey other country so their department of justice knows that the firearm is no longer in the country and not just lost or floating around etc...

I looked into this , unfortunately it meant I would need to have an import license for Singapore ( where I was transiting through).

And to be honest most second hand firearms are far less "used" In Ireland as compared to Australia due to the availability of cheap ammo/reloading, the only thing that might be worth looking at are the large numbers of mil surplus firearms, I foolishly passed up on an unused Portuguese Mauser k98 , ( oberndorf) with nazi and portuguese markings, (A$1000), and an unused Irish contract SMLE in its wrapper!

Dont think you need an export license.

Ireland's legal system has a very simple view on foreign issued licences and possession in Ireland: they're of no value. Could be of use though to demonstrate proficiency when you apply for your Irish licence before you bring the gun in.

    Yes, you can.
Don't know about the export end in Australia, should be straightforward (only took two days to get one here when taking a rifle abroad).
Flying with it is not a problem with most airlines, might be an excess baggage charge. Must notify most airlines at least 48 (preferably 72) hours before flight.
Getting it into Ireland is straightforward, friends and I have done it for a number of firearms without any issues. Dept of Justice will give you an import permit (valid for 72 hours from arrival) which keeps you legal on arrival and allows time to take it to an RFD where it will stay while you apply for a license as normal.
However, if owned abroad for less than 6 months, customs will probably want to charge duty on it.

    Its not that simple!!!

    http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/dangerous-goods/global/en

Travel to, from or through Dubai
Dubai authorities generally require passengers carrying firearms and/or ammunition travelling to, from or through Dubai to obtain an approval.
Information on the approval process and the application form are available through the following links:
Dubai Firearms and/or Ammunition Application Information
Dubai Firearms and/or Ammunition Application Form
Passengers remaining on the same Qantas flight number and aircraft do not require an approval, however all documentation must still be forwarded to dg@qantas.com.au.
Unscheduled Flight Number or Aircraft Change for a Passenger
In the unlikely event a passenger is transferred off their Qantas aircraft onto another aircraft/airline an approval must be sought. All relevant documentation is held electronically by the Qantas local office and staff will manage the application process.
    Important
Some Dubai authorities do not offer a 7 day service therefore, delays in processing the application may occur - possibly up to 72 hours. Qantas will take all appropriate action to accommodate the passenger until the approval is obtained.
Note: A passenger cannot travel until they have received a valid approval.
Travel to, from or through Singapore
Notification for the carriage of firearms and/or ammunition is required by Singapore authorities.
Please complete the Application Permit and email to the following:
    sheafaabrahimbajerai@qantas.com.au
    soophinglai@qantas.com.au
