Hi, hoping to gain a few insights from the tech savvy people here. Looking to buy a new TV for the bedroom. I don't know an awful lot about Plasma vs LCD vs LED, etc. etc., nor about the likes of Samsung vs Sony vs LG, etc, etc.

I have narrowed my options down to two TV's in my price range:

    1. First is the Sony 40" LED TV for €499.

    2. Second is the Samsung 43" Plasma for €419.

The Samsung is obviously a lot cheaper but I find the Sony more aesthetically pleasing and better has better picture/colour. Have heard a lot of negatives for LED??

Will mainly be used at night for general TV, movies and gaming.
Cheers any views are greatly appreciated.

Plasmas produce deeper blacks, better colours and have smoother motion. The picture is more uniform across the panel. On the downside the affordable models are usually low resolution, they use more power and because they use phosphors they are more succeptible to issues over time or with non-uniform use of the pixels (burn in etc).

LCD produces an inferior picture in all respects. The blacks are more greyish, they blur more during motion and if it's edgelit the sides or corners of the panel are often washed out. However 1080p is standard on all but the cheapest models. They have higher peak brightness which makes them more suited to bright rooms/daytime viewing.

There is no such thing as LED. LCD traditionally used CCFL bulbs in the backlights. Almost all panels switched to LED bulbs some years back and they decided to call them LED sets to trick people into buying a new TV. Its still LCD with all the same pros and cons, just very minor differences in PQ and form factor.

LCD is better for the 'average' person and Plasma is suited to people who are really serious about picture quality, videophiles, cinephiles etc. Most people wouldn't even know what black level means.
