Stress

    Hi,
I'm currently in my final year at school (i hope). The thing is my head is absolutely wrecked with the amount of work I have to do. I feel like quitting now before I get even more stressed but I know I cant quit. I spend nearly all Monday - Friday in school until late every night studying and doing homework but I'm still not doing great at everything. Every night when I'm going to sleep all I think about is how stressed I am regarding school work and visualizing myself failing. I actually could not repeat as I couldn't take another year like this one. I don't really know if I want to go to college but I will probably have to if i get the points. Part of me does want to go but another part doesn't. If college is a continuation of this year I DEFINITELY do not want to go. I couldn't take it. I'm so confused as to what to do. How can I stop being so worried and anxious about this all the time?

College is very much NOT a continuation of the Leaving Cert so you've no worries on that score.

It's only November so you have a good while to go. I presume you have orals and maybe other practical exams in April? Once you've those out the way, things will be easier, I promise.

Looking back on my own LC, I don't know how I did all that work, but I did! The point is you get through it. There are times you feel like screaming, but just remember come next June it'll all be over.

You need to look after yourself too and that involves getting plenty of fresh air, sleep and good healthy food. After school study isn't for everyone (it wasn't for me) so find what suits YOU (not your teachers or parents) and go with it. Eg. Personally I have to have noise in the background when I'm doing anything, so I would study with the radio on. Yet every study expert recommends silence... It works for me, so why would I change?

You know what type of person you are and you know what suits you, what's within your abilities. There are plenty of good courses available for all points ranges. These things have a way of working themselves out anyway. I know lots of people who didn't do the best LC necessarily and have good jobs and are happy.

Have to agree! - College/university is absolutely nothing like school. There is much more freedom but also responsibility thrown on your shoulders. In college, lecturers don't take that much notice if you miss a class/lecture, for instance, and it is very much up to you to ensure you stay on top of the work. It is also fun getting to know all the culchies who suddenly appear in your class in college :P (unless you already are one...)

I've been through the entire education system all the way to Level 9 (doctoral degree), and the higher you go up the more independent-minded you have to become.

Trust me when I say college and secondary school are two completely separate entities.

Don't get me wrong there's still work and deadlines in college but if you have the opportunity don't squander it. College is probably the single greatest experience of your youth life
