Hunting in Spain and France

I’m just back from Midi Pyrenees region of France where I was invited by a friend to join him hunting. We stayed with his French friends who made our experience a total immersion of both French culture and hunting.

Our first leg of the journey took us through the Pyrenees and into Spain. We spent a weekend on driven shoots with Boar (Sanglier), Roe Dear (Chevreuil), Goats (Chamois), Fox (Renard) and Hare (Lièvre) on the card. The total bag for the weekend was five boars, one of which fell to my friend’s gun. I missed the opportunity on a boar and a goat (too much Armagnac and not enough swing).

The grollach and skinning is a group thing.

After the weekend we headed back to France where I got my first Roe Buck (.243 Steyr Mannlicher), unfortunately he had just shed the antlers. Just after the grollach I missed another at 180m (this time no Armagnac to blame just bad shooting).

Spent the next several evenings stalking for Roe and Boar to no avail but there was plenty of signs and trails and we often came across animals on the sides of the maize fields after dark.

During the week we visited two traditional pigeon (Palombes) hunting hides. Both use live decoys perched on cradles suspended in and around trees and controlled by a complicated series of pulleys and control cords.

The idea is to encourage flighting birds to come into the area. Here the system then differs, in one region the birds are tricked onto the ground where a large two sided net is sprung and the birds are trapped live.

The other system involves shot guns and the birds are shot off the branches. It is a very sociable sport with extremely comfortable hides with heating, cooking and mod cons. One hide we visied was 30m up in the tree tops.

On the last evening of the trip my friend bagged this lovely roe dear to complete an excellent week’s adventure.

Nice Boar in first photo, good stocky build, when their mountain dwellers they have a different build to one from the Plains.

So did I, seriously big grin on my face when it was given to me, got to shoot one in 300 Win Mag as well.

They tend to favour autos (3 shot max by law) followed by straight pulls over standard bolt action.
