Friends?

I have something playing on my mind a little. A few months back a short term relationship ended to my regret. I was fed the usual lets still be friends line. I agreed and felt it was manageable after some distance. I never heard from him again. I feel insulted if it was said to soften the blow with cliches. He said it more than once too which made me think he wanted it. I could have gone along with any request as I was not too terribly put out either way after the dust settled. I am just wondering why he really wanted us to remain in touch then disappear.
I sent a message a while ago to say hi and see how he was in case he was too afraid to initiate contact and I got a curt, if not insulting reply back. I know I will be told to move on as he seems to have, but I find his words and actions to be confusing. I could easily have just cut him off but he almost begged me not to and now this is what I get. Is this normal?

I'm sorry, I think he said it because it's what you're supposed to say during a break up.

I think it's time to let this one go sadly.

Pretty standard break up line which means absolutely nothing in reality.

What do you want, to be friends and discuss each others new conquests? It is standard to say such words during a parting of the ways. Move on.

To put a slightly different spin on it, maybe he decided that staying friends wasn't such a good idea after all? Or he has met someone else?

Yep its a standard line. Got it myself recently and never her heard from her again. Like you the insincerity of it annoyed me. It made me doubt everything she ever said to me. I don't think I will ever use this line with anyone.

    Typical break up line!!!

In most cases being friends doesn't work as new relationships happen and the new partners may not be happy about keeping contact with old Partners. Some people wont mind but if it is a choice between upsetting an old partner or a new partner who do you think will be chosen!!
