Battlefield 4 map review

    So every battlefield game stands or falls by its maps. Bad company 1 had meh maps its mostly forgotten, bad company 2 had awesome maps it's carved into our flesh, battlefield 3 was mixed at first but improved with dlc and so battlefield 4 takes its stand.


    10 maps starting with:

    Siege of Shanghai

    Conquest: It's basically urban wake island with actually well designed cap points, Really like this map, the sniper hell from the beta is mostly gone as is the desire to knock over the tower in the first few seconds of a game. The result is a dynamic fast flowing map with a focus on verticality. The airspace has shrunk since the beta sort of hurting the once exciting building skulking of the helicopters I give it a B+, it only suffers from post tower collapse version pretty much removing all the details that make the map great.

    Rush: Is probably the most demanding rush map in the game, the mcoms are almost always really close to each other in tight easily defendable positions, if you are not organised you are not going anywhere. I havnt even seen the third stage yet, the second is set around the metro and both mcoms are practically in the same room. C- if you are organised its an intense fun with some good gun fights, but pubs wise it'll be more then frustrating, especially if too many of your team goes sniper, as they will tempted to be via the rooftops.

    Obliteration: Pretty much the case study map for the mode, insane mode that is simplified and made clear by this maps layout, good starting position to learn obliteration and a damn fun one anyway A+

    TeamDM/Domination: An interesting example of giving an obvious camping spot and then making it easier for the side not holding the camping spot to win, nice frantic DM map with a big emphasize on moving B-

    Parasel Storm

    Conquest: The showcase for naval combat and it delivers in spades, big cap points with lots of variety and cover make for longer range fighting to be the focus, the single AAA unit at B becomes a major point to fight over, though the often forgotten but so very amazing cap point E with the extra scout helicopter is the hidden prize. Nice big sniper tower to lure snipers into a false sense of security and the dynamic weather make for a map that delivers the action all across the map. Decent airspace for the jets so that the dogfighting can be put to good use. Levelution here is prob the most practical as it gives the side holding C an automated AAA gun which really can turn the tide if you hold E as well.

    Rush: The winner for most in your face f*ck you opening to a rush game. Starting on a sinking carrier, this place alone makes the rush mode worth playing. Its intense, the interior of the carrier is atmospheric and great for flanking and quick gunfights. Again Naval power reigns supreme but once you are past the first wave I find this Rush map loses it's charm as each point progresses. Still though for that absolutely insane opening it gets solid B+

    Obliteration: Have not played

    TDM/Domination: Have not played

    Zavod 311

    Conquest: A somewhat bland conquest map that bounces from being too intense to being overpowered by vehicles, the underground segment is pretty cool and again nice big detailed cap points make for good infantry fighting, but it is a very swingy map. the levelution in its delivery is a bit underwhelming though its process using a computer and the rsult blocking the middle passage opening the underground more is much more effective, probably the one levelution that is tripped straight away so it can be put to good use. The odd thing on this map is that it has one of the biggest airspaces in the game (compared to the ground , yet no jets. It's a busy map that can be fun but also frustrating give it a C.

    Rush: Complete opposite, clear, direct and fun. This is an excellent Rush map that keeps your attention every stage. The mcoms are challenging but not impossible, there is a clear defensive line and lots of options. Zavod 311 may be an average conquest map but its one of the best rush maps. A!

    TDM/Domination: Tries to be similer to siege of shanghai with two buildings to camp on, sadly unlike shanghai the camping is more effective here and the level can get bogged down with snipers and m320s raining from above. Give it a miss and I give it a D.

    Lancang Dam

    Conquest: Worse map in the game. It's bland in itself. Sure it has the complex cap points every other BF4 map has, but it has little charm on its own. Worse the air space is tiny, the bases are far too close to each other making the AAA unit each side get stupidly overpowered and dominate the game far too easily. The cap points themselves may be infantry friendly but the big open spaces between them are not and the name of this map is armour and boats dicking on everything. This map puts me off whenever it comes up in rotation. D! The levelution is also the most meh one in the game.

    Rush: Better then the conquest version, but still very bland, nothing in it sticks out. It's rather annoying naming a map after a dam and it's only a background element.

    Obliteration: Not played

    TDM/Domination: Not played

    Flood Zone

    Conquest: Personal favourite conquest map, it's excellent infantry focused map with some great cap points and variety, the rooftop area is downright fantastic and has given me some of my best gunfights this game. Cap A is also a great point to fight over and E and D spice things up. The highlight though is the levelution, it doesnt dramaticly change the map, but it changes it enough and adds that atmosphere that just sells this as a complete package. It also shoots down the idea that swimming is boring by using the dive function to find backway into cap areas like A and into buildings and being well spaced that you dont ever really swim anywhere too far. Only complaints are there appears to be a bug that makes spawning at C impossible and it takes alot to activate the levelution. Finally I have rarely seen any side simply walk over their opponents on this map it always delivers on the intense close fights

    Best map of the game for conquest A+++.

    Rush: Almost the best rush map too...except the first area is a bit of a slog defending wise and not the most fun, once you are pass that though every other cap point is brilliant. Highlight though is the last with the attackers scaling the car park. Only issue is the leveution again takes too much to activate, especially for a rush game. But it does make the last set of mcoms even more fun to assault. B+

    TDM/Domination: Have not played

    Obliteration: Have not played

    Golmud Railway

    Conquest: Another swingy map, the lower half is dominated by vehicles and if you are not in one it can be a chore. But the upper half with A, B and C are proper infantry sections and a lot of fun. This is also the map with the best destruction as the entire upper half of the map can be levelled to a degree not seen even in Bad company 2. You can actually take massive chunks out of the ground in all 3 cap points making it difficult to bring tanks in and every building can be levelled to the ground. But it is again a very swingy map and can either be an exciting intense fight to the death like I had tonight: (http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf4/battlereport/show/1/396777821522310784/172841481/ or it can be a hammering from every side chore that frustrates. The IEDs are a great idea that will become a bigger deal when people get to know where they all are, I laughed at one point when I pushed the detonator of the wrong IED the other night leading to a *It didnt work?* moment and then a big explosion behind me...*oops* the train is a disapointing dynamic which I feel failed to deliver, it needed to be a bigger train allowing for infantry to fight it out onboard to take the point while tanks and jets strafe it. In the end it is far too easy to take simply by driving a tank beside it. C+


    Rush: And the shocker of the day...This is possibly the best rush map in the game, it's entirely set on the side of the map that can be levelled and its all uphill. Equalling the most intense attacking push Battlefield can deliver, It is really just shocking how much better this map works as a Rush map over a conquest map, it brings into focus what works and delivers exactly what many have wanted since BC2. I expect to see a lot of rush servers running this map. It is just too good A+++

    TDM/Domination/Obliteration: Have not played

    Operation Locker

    Conquest: It was feared this would be the metro of BF4. But it is so much better then metro. So many options, even for the big centre piece cap point, each cap point is unique either being different levels (D is great) or in the open, the level looks great, plays great and shows that an infantry only battlefield map works A!

    Rush: It is oddly the only Rush map that works just like its conquest counterpart, it kind of makes it pointless but at the same time everything good about it's conquest variation (minus the back capping) is also good here B+

    TDM/Domination: The centre dome takes a backseat as points D and E are the centre stage for here and rightly so, a twisting turning nightmare jungle for tdm fights and possible the best map in the game for tdm and domination A!



    Take a break here and will fill in the missing bits and the remaining maps when I have had some rest.

    Hanian Resort

    Conquest: Nice mixed bag map with bits of naval, air and armour and a really quite fun hotel interior in the centre of it all. It's open but not in the same get stomped hard for running infantry from point to point like Lancang Dam or Golmud Railway and again interesting cap points to fight over (except the ship, which looks cool but doesnt offer a lot) it hasnt really grabbed me but it hasnt frustrated me either. I have yet to see any activate the levelution on this map. C+

    Rush: Have not played

    TDM: Focused around the hotel and all the better for it, could be the best TDM in the game just for the variety it offers B+

    Domination: have not played

    Obliteration: Have not played


    Dawnbreaker

    Conquest: I've played this map a lot, but I have yet to get into the feel for it, some swear by it being the best map in the game, but the airspace is tiny and the armour tends to dominate large parts of the map. But it does shine at times, The cente cap point C is a clusterf*ck and never worth going near without a tank, but D and E are good fun and it's a nice enough sniping map. A C+, but the airspace issue is dreadful on this map.

    Rush: Only briefly played and got stomped royally by IFV's so no real comment yet.

    TDM/Domination: Have not played


    Rogue Transmission

    Conquest: The map I have played the least so far and not without trying, I just keep missing it. But what I have seen is good, its kind of feels like Caspian Boarder to me, though making the attack chopper a neutral cap point to fight over was a nice touch. Good map for sniping, good map for infantry and armour. But I have not played it enough to make final call

    Rush: Have not played :(

    TDM/Domination/Obliteration: Have not played.

    When has it ever not been a clusterf*ck for the attackers?

    I am pretty sure most of the bad company 2 maps where the same for the attackers as well and bf3 was pretty ridiculous

    I agree about Golmud on rush, it's great craic.
    I'm not so keen on Dawnbreaker, it looks piss poor and isn't much fun.
    Rogue transmission is fun too.

    Hopefully the DLC maps aren't as specialised as in BF3 and we get more well rounded maps.

    You wonder if it can be redeemed and made playable?

    But it does appear they've applied levolution to the old maps.

    I note the F2000 is in there too.

    watch teh video firestorm is completley changed.

    Also only play on servers with sniper limits, band of brothers has a limit of 3.

    Intervention too i think.
