Any advice about good courses/things to attend and do during intern year? academic or otherwise?

I will be doing ACLS, and was considering doing APLS or ATLS... Any good conferences or information days? Anyone have advice from their own intern year?

Read a few books, check out a few nice restaurants, book a nice holiday or two. You deserve it - you've passed your exams and dont have any for the year!

Good things to do in intern year? Sleep as much as you can whenever you can :) I would have thought you'd get more out of ACLS or ATLS when you've a bit more experience. But I'm a while out of it so maybe things have changed. As ^^ says, enjoy your time off, socialise and take a few holidays.

ACLS is definitely one that should be done earlier rather than later.

ATLS and APLS are better done when you're going through SHO jobs that require their use such as ED, surgical rotations; there's a lot of material in both and doing it just for the sake of it doesn't make a whole lot of sense when those skills you've picked up aren't being used on a regular basis,

I'd definitely do a couple of audits if you can, or get involved in some other such research piece; it'll stand to you in years to come when applications need to be sent in, and if you have an idea of what area you'd like to get in to, a related research or audit piece done this year would put you in good stead. Even a case report of something random you've seen in your job would be good, and the bosses are fairly supportive with all this.

In terms of study days, if you can get the time it would be worth going to things like hot topic days in the RCSI if you can make it, they're pretty good.

And yea, enjoy your year. You're earning some money, you've worked hard to get to where you are and you're working hard this year. Enjoy your downtime, keep active and make sure you see your mates regularly.
