So I am looking to buy a diesel car, reliable with good mpg. Don't know what to get, want something reasonably priced and unsure whether it is worth paying the extra money for a model with cheap tax..

    How much are you spending?
How much mileage are you doing?

    preferably under 10k
about 25 thousand miles a year

    Miles? Years? Preferred body style?

If you're spending that then I'd say yes go for post 08 (those cars are nearly 6 years old anyway)
With that type of mileage I'd get something with cruise control as it'll make your life a lot easier.

I'd be looking at a Civic 2.2 diesel (I have a civic so I'm biased) I find them very comfortable for long journies and they're a good solid car with a good record (apart from the odd slipping clutch if driven too enthusiastically)

forgive my ignorance but if its a 2.2 will it still have as good mpg??

I had been thinking an a3 but the last one I went to see had some issue with oil which apparently costs a fortune to fix, so kinda wary of them now...
had also been considering a golf?? 2 door astra?? maybe a auris??

As good as what? Its under no stress carrying a car like the civic and it has 6 gears so it won't be revving high, granted some 1.6 diesels will be better on fuel.

On the other hand, an auris 1.4 diesel for example won't be that economical if you're doing high speeds, its also a pain to drive because of the lack of power. If you're doing big miles you want it to be as easy as possible.

how are civics maintenance wise?? do they put up insurance quotes like the older civics? only 22 so still have to worry about insurance :-/

I have a good 10 years on you so everything is cheap to insure!
I don't think they load the post 00 models like they do for the older ones.
Best to do some online quotes.

You could go all sensible with a 1.6 CRDI Hyundai i30 or Kia Cee'd, the latter being more likely to have cruise control but a slightly less nice car overall.

The Kia Pro Cee'd might be worth a look too if you're young and want something less mumsy looking.
    Basically a 3 door Cee'd.
