Migration from 81-D to ZV - ever possible/still possible?

A friend was toying with the idea of changing his registration from 81-D-nnnn to ZV-nnnnn.

Now, apart from any arguments about how a 5-digit ZV plate is rubbish, even compared to an 81-D-nnnn one, he tells me that he tried to do it a few years ago (after the car's 30th anniversary of first reg), but was told that it wasn't possible.

I was always under the impression that it was possible to move from a YY-CC-nnnn plate to a ZV one, but not back again, but now that I want to confirm it for sure, I can't seem to find any definitive info on Revenue.ie, or anywhere else on the web - does anyone know if this was ever true, and if it was, has it changed in recent times?

    AFAIK, it is still possible.

Personally I would stay with '81-D-nnnn' rather than 'ZV nnnnn' - and thats coming from a self-confessed 'plate nut' who prefers originally-issued Irish plates! ;):D

Agreed, 81-D-nnnn (and ZVnnnn) used to be considered "rubbish" plates, but compared to 81-D-120nnn and ZVnnnnn, they look rather good…

Anyone actually done this migration and know the procedure for sure?

Yes I've done it. It was about 2 years ago, I found the form on the web and then went to my local Revenue VRT Office (Santry) they said I needed my PPS number and they also would not accept my photocopied form. However since the number was on it they had to bugger off and find an original, yellow/buff colour. They did it there and then and I got my ZV reg.

I'll see if I can find the Form number.

It's odd how I remembered the number of a form I've never used or had a need for, but I can't remember to buy her indoors an anniversary card in a timely manner...:o

Thanks for the answers above, the good news is that my mate decided not to migrate to a (5-digit) ZV reg, he has simply decided to decided to get an ACE plate for his 81 D reg.

PS: Macplaxton, you're a bit strange alright...

Can you post it up here? This will come up in Google searches I'm sure, and it might be helpful to have the form here.
