A quick question for those in the know. I have 2 stoves connected to normal chimney flues. They are very noisey on a windy day due to venturian effect and the stove pipe being smaller than the flue. I have to put up cowels to keep the rain out so I was wondering would any specific cowl help eleminate this to some degree or just standard cowl do the job? Would they also be drawing/sucking heat from the room due to this?

    china man hat type?

i have the china man hat, with a mesh sides so no birds will nest.

i suppose on windy day it will pull a bit, i can certainly hear it. but if your stove is good and put in correctly, it should pull anything from the room if vents are closed off when not lit.

I don't find it drawing heat from the room so I assume it is ok. I lit a few candles around and near the stove location to see if they flicker or pull twoards an up draft but seems fine. I ran a candle flame close to the stove doors seal and flue pipe entry and didin't see any signs of the flame being pulled twoards them. The guy who installed them mentioned this china man hat type thing but I didn't think they actually went by this name:confused:.
