Black Tie Wedding help

Hi!

My mum has a dilemma that I really cant help with as I've no experience of these things. She's been invited to a black tie wedding. I know the expectation is for women to wear an evening dress but my mum really isn't comfortable with this - she's plus size (size 18-20) and really doesn't have the confidence to wear any kind of dress. When I suggested it she just refused. She would normally wear good black trousers and a nice blouse to events and would always look well. But I imagine she'd look very under-dressed at this event??

She's really struggling to think of what to wear. Can anyone help?

Shes in her late 50's, would be about 5'4", and an apple shape. She was thinking about getting some very flared black trousers or something just a bit different from her usual.

I think trousers can look great at a black tie event- the key will be the fabrics and colours.

Fabrics she needs to think luxurious, so velvets, silks, fur/ fake fur etc. You can get some lovely wide leg trousers these days, those would make a good base.

As for colours, look into 'jewel' colours like jade, emerald, sapphire, etc. Black is a great base to those. Nothing stopping her checking out brighter colours.

I've seen similar women to your Mum
Look fab in wide leg velvet trousers, a Chinese style silk top, and some nice sandals. Throw some glittery jewellery on top and you're sorted!

Thank you! That was exactly the kind of look we were imagining. Have you seen any of the wide legged trousers around in any shops lately? I won't be home again for a few weeks but I'd like to bring her out shopping!

Your are so thoughtful to be planning to bring your Mam out shopping when you come home. Don't worry about her, with such a considerate daughter helping her out she will have the confidence to choose something gorgeous and look fab on her day out

The black Planet trousers Jos28 linked are also available in plum, could be a lovely look with the right top
Edit: the tops and the trouser suit are gorgeous too, I'd have a look at Monsoon for similar embellished tunic tops
