Would people recommend psychology for anxiety/depression? I've come through a 3 month suicidal bout of depression. (I've been well for 2 1/2 months with few days of anxiety. They finally found the right med combination that brought me out of it. I went to a psychologist while I was very ill and can hardly remember any of the 6 session because I was so sick and frantic I'd never get better. My psychiatrist wants me to do more psychology and I requested a different psychologist as the other one I associate with being very ill. Got a letter today from new psychologist giving me an appointment for next week.
What will I talk about though? I don't know how it will benefit me. I also have a fear that doing psychology will somehow make me sick again it's a fear of mine. Any thoughts?

Hi, I too have suffered depression over the last twenty years and have had more than a few sessions myself.
Imo, I found they did help if only too realise that there are people out there that understand what you are going through.
If I were you I would attend the sessions and see how you go.:)

    Lukesmom, hi.

I saw a psychologist for ~4 months and the difference between me then and me now is outstanding.

Me then: suicidal, caught up in a web of daily self harm & horrendously self destructive behaviour, horrible interpersonal relationships with others. I was on 5 different anti anxiety, anti depressants, anti psychotics... I was a wreck. I had two suicide attempts. I was in a bad place.

Now: med free, dating, haven't self harmed in months... I'm not saying it was a cure or the only thing that helped, or condoning / advertising being med free but it worked for me.

Go into it with an open mind. It's not for everyone. But it worked for me.

    Good luck xx

Maybe you could mention your fears? It's likely the psychologist will ask what you want to get out of the process, ie how/where do you see yourself at the end.
I can understand your hesitancy but I hope all you have to fear is fear itself, so fingers crossed things work out.

    Hey op. Psychology student here.
Firstly, i'm glad you're feeling better. Fair play for looking for help in the first place. It may seem like a simple step to some but it's often the most difficult.
To answer your questions, yes I would definitely recommend it.
You don't really need to know what to talk about. The only thing i'd say is try not be too apprehensive. Your Psychologist is a professional. He or she will be well capable of guiding you through it.
Your fear you may get sick again is understandable but I assure you it's completely irrational. Your psychologist is there to help you after all. Can I ask you why you think you have this fear?

Thanks I don't know why I have this fear. It's just probably because I don't ever want to get sick again and I'm afraid of things triggering it.
