OK , sorry if this has been covered on another tread but haunt been able to find the answers my questions below. if you know of a link or answer to below queries id be great full for your response.

    I have a 2003 E39 525d touring with a GM 5L40E auto transmission.
Torque converter and transmission are both knackered. I cant afford the cost for a rebuild at moment so I've been searching for a pre-owned donor transmission but cant find a transmission with the same part number as mine.

My part number is GM 24007520851 - ZN (A5S 390R)
This has been replaced with the GM 2400 7530443 ZO (A5S 390R)
and the GM 24007511009 WZ is also a matching donor

I have managed to track down GM 24001423897 WG (A5S 390R) and .
From what I can see this is the exact same transmission as mine albeit from a 2001 530d saloon but it should fit perfect.

My problem is that I don't know what effect the broadcasting code WG will have , if any.
Will my ecu recognise the WG transmission?
If the electrics are not compatible is there an easy work around?
Is this transmission a compatible donor in place of my knackered transmission?

Who told you the trans and the t-converter is gone together
Is this the box with a big plastic sump if so there's a filter in the sump
Look up autotrans in Dublin, give them a bell there very helpful
There could be a sticker on the box saying sealed for life
We change them on the rangerovers all the time, oil is very expensive and the complete sump comes with filter fitted not cheap either

Torque converter is definitely gone. 160,000 mile on it. Sump is metal type. Car was loosing drive due to low oil pressure caused by a blocked filter about 2 months ago. had 80MPh shutter before that and a bit clunky going up the gears when the lock up clutch was engaging. Ive changed the Filter last month and put in new oil which got me 2500 miles but its gone again now and the oil is full of metal glitter and the new filter is blocked again. gear oil light comes on and this time i was stuck in a bad spot so had to drive a bit with oil light on, could smell friction plates burn. Gear box is working fine but if I'm replacing the torque converter then i want to do the box also when its out. I have sussed out that the codes wont effect me but i think ill have to bite the bullet on this one.I will ring Autotrans but have a reasonable price from Bohernahreena gearbox center for full reconditioning of box and torque so if they confirm what they include ill go with them.

I'm hearing this sealed for life from many manufacturers. it gets the car past warranty period then it's the the owners problem.

looks as if you have done all the homework ok your on the right path anyway we got a secondhand box and converter from kilcock car dismantlers and it was sound still driving that was about 2 years ago but worked out a lot cheaper than the recon way, customer just couldnt afford it so they done the deal and we fitted it for them its taking a chance

In fairness the car is nearly 11 years old and has 160k miles on it. A bit past the warranty alright, most cars would be scrapped at this stage :p

I bought a 10 year old automatic E60 myself recently with 97k miles on it, the autobox filter and oil had just been replaced.

I ruled out cars with over 110k miles as the risk of the autobox failing was going to be too high in my expectations. That the box had been serviced was a bonus. I hope they did it right though. A non-perfect oil service on one of these boxes can do more harm than good. There's no concensus on this!

I too don't believe in most cars are capable of hundreds of thousand miles and only a small percentage of that model will get to a couple hundred thousand.

seal for life auto boxes don't seem to be as long lived as those that have regular oil and filter changes. It stands to reason that the fluid will change properties over time and contamination will restrict flow throught pathways and filter.

I know there is two schools of thought with a box that never had a fluid change with high mileage leave it as it is or risk changing fluid and dislodge dirt that could block a valve and damage it.

In my opinion it would be better if all auto boxes were regularly serviced but then again I'm thinking of vechical lasting longer and lets face it the motor industry isn't. They need new sales at some point.
