Well folks a well worn question but I'm going to ask it again anyway. What bull would you recommend for heifers? Is HCA still the bull of choice?

Pacha 08 (PCH) is a serious maternal bull alright on paper, I'd forgotten about him. Have you any calves by him?

Another one I like the look of (on ICBF) is EFZ. I've a few in-calf to him due in Jan.

Pacha is a good maternal bull but i personally dont like the idea of keeping replacements from first calved heifers if you can do it from your cows instead.

I have a few Lim heifers that are getting KJB Lm in December.

I've a few in calf to efz as well. Interesting to see what are they like. Very happy with GWO calves. All calved unassisted and are growthy and as quiet as lambs.

I know what you're saying. However my replacements now have 2 generations of AI breeding whereas the older ladies at best have 1. Therefore I'm happy to bring heifers from these in as replacements.

I'm aiming to have 1 calving period of 9-12 weeks with heifers calving down at 24mo. I plan to use maternal bulls for all first service and terminal sires there after. 2 benefits: 1) replacement heifers will be old enough to come in at ~24mo, 2) as all replacements will be from 1st service my herd fertility should improve over the years.

I would use goulding jumbo king (AA) AND Ardlea Dan (LM). Small at birth but develop quickly into decent animals.

I agree with not keeping heifers calves as replacements as I don't like cows bred from easy calving bulls because from experience they tend to be harder to calve than daughters of harder calving bulls.

ICBF gives the daughter's likely calving ability as well a the bull's CD.

I dont think i'd use ADX on heifers. At 7.8%, he's more of a 'mature cow' type bull.

Dubai THZ is what we went for this year. A few heifers carrying to him, time will tell.
Prior to THZ we used FL22. Nice compact calves, bit of quality to them.......but wild. He's gone now anyway.

used him on few Simmental first calvers for last 2 years all bull calves easily calved with average Gestation and turned into good weanlings sold on a par with older cows calves.
