Last night's RTE1 showing of 'Hector breaks for the border' was geo-blocked on both Sky satellite and NI min-mux here in NI. Interestingly on the mini-mux the advert breaks were shown during the programme's duration but these were not shown on Sky. This is the first non-sports programme on both satellite and Freeview geo-blocked that I can remember in some time. AFAIK BBCNI are due to broadcast this at a later date so obviously they hold the rights for this in NI.

Wonder will tonight's programme on the Disappeared be geo-blocked as BBC1 NI are showing it an hour later?

Programme on Disappeared was as expected geo-blocked on both Sky and Freeview here in NI with adverts in between again shown on Freeview but not on Sky.

I mean what is the point? With Saorview so widely available what difference does it make? I would think more people in Northern Ireland use Saorview than the NIMM, and doing this just makes the NIMM pointless.

You're absolutely right but almost certainly this is to do with rights issues e.g. BBCNI hold rights to broadcast 'Hector breaks for the Border' and 'The Disappeared' in the north while RTE do not. So these programmes are geo-blocked. But there is not a consistency between Sky and Freeview e.g. 'Home and Away' on RTE is geo-blocked on Freeview but not on Sky in NI.
