Question for parents with young kids...

Do you pilfer favorites out of their Halloween candy?

If so, what do you take?

I don't have kids and I generally don't keep candy in the house, but I think I picked out half of the Snickers fun-size bars from the candy bowl before the trick-or-treaters rang my bell this evening. :(

My cousin swaps her kids bag of chocolate/sweets for a trick or treat bag full of fruit and trail mixes and nuts and stuff. Poor kid

Well, my son is too small to do this yet, but I'm fairly certain that there'll be pilfering to be had in a few years time :pac:

I love parma violets and they are really hard to find! Found loads in the hall earlier ready to be given out. The heartburn is so worth it :D

I brought as much of the sweets as I could into work tonight for all my work colleagues to feast on. Easiest way to rid of em bar throwing them in the bin.

    Candy?

    We're losing our Irishisms.

    For shame.

My OH is a shocker for this...if you think the Halloween pilfering is bad you should see the state of him at Easter- I had to replace the eggs twice last year (ok I was complicit in one of the raids). In fairness last year my kids got so many sweets they made them last til Christmas

    Don't you mean sweets?

This is the first Halloween we took our daughter trick or treating and apart from a few bits, it was all either pilfered or recycled and given back out. In my defence she isn't even two yet so she isn't allowed sweets but we are in the US so couldn't not take part in such a big thing. I think pilfering might be frowned upon here judging by some of the looks I got. Letting your kids eat a bag full of candy though is perfectly acceptable!

No, I mean candy. What is this, the Daily Mail? Malibu is not in Ireland. ;)

When my daughter gets home she sorts out the "do not touch" stuff (i.e. her faves) and everything else is fair game.

Prefer the word 'candy' meself. 'Sweets' just sounds too childlike to me. Like saying there's X amount of 'sleeps' til Christmas or wanting the gender of the baby to be 'a surprise'.

An Irish person saying candy makes me cringe. You can't say knickers and candy, its panties and candy or knickers and sweets!!

I go through my daughter's bag to check on "date expired" stuff. It's in her best interest, you see...

There's very few perks to this parenting lark, so of course the Hallowe'en sweets are fair game. As is dressing your child up in whatever costume you get a kick out of until they're old enough to decide for themselves. And the occasional white lie, just because they're incredibly gullible and you can get away with the most outrageous stuff.

My kids went out today and left their 'candy' unattended. I put a rather large dent in the pile, I feel sick, but i'll be ready for round 2 once they go to bed.

Yes, I think this is perhaps the best example of using your unsuspecting child as entertainment that I've ever seen.

I remember when I used to live in America my friends mother would eat half of everything. Supposedly it's to find razor blades that people may have put into it. It is like trying out someones steak to make sure it isnt poisoned. But what happens in the blade is in the other half? Better eat that too.

    'Halloween Candy' :o

You mention 'Candy' three time in you opening post, but who calls sweets/chocolate/treats "Candy" in Ireland?

You must be American, in which case I apologise :)

Is it so inconceivable that people who post here aren't necessarily Irish?

I don't have kids myself and I forgot to get sweets in for kids calling round, so I turned off the lights and hid from them, even had to do a stealthy duck under the front door to avoid them, it was either that or give them cigarettes, and the parents weren't happy with that last year...

I take a few of the chewy sweets. I did too many goodie bags for the trick or treaters so no need to do too much pilfering this year.
