    Spotted this on instructables...

A cheap solution for those looking to power on/off a HTPC by any remote control button... As well as having additional options for the likes of powering screens up/down, lights on/off etc.

Dont think i would mount it like the author has... It looks a bit crappy like that in a cut out dvd facia. Going to order the relay board on ebay and try it out.

Except a PC needs to be shut down properly , not just have its power taken away like that.
Sudden power cuts can and do damage PC parts and or corrupt OS installs !!
Its a great idea if you dont mind shelling out for new PC parts every couple of weeks !!

Buy the correct hardware in the first place , and starting up and shutting down a PC with a remote is simple.

Anything compatible with the Microsoft Media Center remote can do it.

You didnt read the instructable andy! :-)

Its relay is connected to the main front power button on the pc which on most pcs powers on the pc when pressed and also the same button powers it off properly (shut down) when pressed while the pc is running.

In windows you can go to control panel - >power settings to change the way your power button responds when pressed while the pc is on... Options are: shut down, do nothing, ask me what i want to do, and sleep.

Im sure linux has something similar.

Its not anything like just cutting the main power from the pc at all... It shuts it down correctly... Even while in the likes of xbmc or any program.
